Statesmen edge SIC in OT, 82-78

Playing your best basketball at the end of the season is the goal for teams and Lincoln Trail College's men's squad appears to be heading in that direction.

The Statesmen picked up their third straight Great Rivers Athletic Conference victory and their fourth win in their last six games overall Wednesday, outlasting host Southeastern Illinois College 82-78 in overtime.

The game was close throughout, with 15 ties and 10 lead changes. Lincoln Trail held its biggest lead of 10 points in the first half, before settling for a 30-24 lead at halftime. However, Southeastern Illinois picked up the pace in the second half, outscoring LTC 44-38 to force overtime. In the extra session, the Statesmen outscored Southeastern Illinois 14-10 to pick up the victory.

Both teams shot well from the floor, making the same number of field goals (28) and made over 50 percent of their attempts. The difference came at the free throw like, where Lincoln Trail made 19-29 foul shots (66 percent), while Southeastern Illinois was 14-20 at the charity stripe (70 percent).

Jesse Tesmer paced LTC with 23 points, seven rebounds and two assists, while Caleb Begle posted 17 points, including four three-pointers, eight rebounds and two assists. Dennis Hightower contributed 13 points, five assists and two rebounds, Nick Painter collected six points, six assists and four rebounds, Jacob Duncan totaled six points, two rebounds, one steal and one assist, Ron Dietz netted six points and one assist, Jordan Houser added four points and two assists, John Bootz had four points and one blocked shot and Jake Newton had three points, two rebounds and two assists.

Four players reached double figures for Southeastern Illinois, led by Michael Walker with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Jamar Rivera, Lloyd Davis and Isaiah Thomas netted 15, 14 and 13 points, respectively for Southeastern Illinois.

The win gave the Statesmen a sweep in the season series, as LTC also won at home on Jan. 19, 66-57.

Lincoln Trail (14-13, 5-8 GRAC) will play host to Kaskaskia College for a GRAC contest - which is also Sophomore Night and Homecoming - Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
