Statesmen snap two-game skid with 75-64 win over Southwestern Illinois

Just when Lincoln Trail College's men's basketball team appears headed in the wrong direction, the Statesmen dust themselves off an find a way to right the ship once again.

Coming off consecutive non-conference losses that saw them fall below the .500 mark once again, the Statesmen knocked off the second-place team in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference, Southwestern Illinois College, 75-64 Monday in Robinson.

"We played really well," LTC head coach Mike Ray said. "That was probably our best 40 minutes of the season. We shared the ball really well and did a nice job on the glass, outrebounding a much taller team."

The Statesmen managed to overcome an eight-point deficit in the first half to take a 40-37 lead at halftime, then extended their lead to as many as 14 in the second half, as they outscored SWIC 35-27 over the final 20 minutes to pull away for the win.

Lincoln Trail managed to overcome a 12-point deficit at the free throw line by outscoring SWIC 18-3 from three-point range, which aided the Statesmen in their victory. The Statesmen made 30-63 field goals overall (48 percent), including 24-45 from two-point range (53 percent) and 6-18 from three-point range (33 percent), while SWIC made 21-41 shots from the floor (51 percent), which included a 20-35 performance inside the arc (57 percent), but just 1-6 from long distance (17 percent). The Statesmen also made 9-12 free throws (75 percent), while SWIC hit 21-32 foul shots (66 percent).

Dennis Hightower led LTC with 13 points, nine assists, four rebounds and one steal, while Jake Newton totaled 13 points, three rebounds, three assists, one steal and one blocked shot. Jesse Tesmer posted 10 points, four rebounds and one steal, Jordan Houser netted nine points and three rebounds, Caleb Begle contributed eight points, four rebounds and one assist, Adam Hendrix recorded six points, six rebounds and one assist, Nick Painter collected five points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and one blocked shot, Ron Dietz tossed in four points, Jacob Duncan added three points and one assist, Daryll Walker had two points and four rebounds and John Bootz had two points and one rebound.

Keanau Post led SWIC with 18 points, two blocked shots and one rebound, while Tony Bradley posted 11 points and two blocked shots.

Lincoln Trail (13-13, 4-8 GRAC) will play at Southeastern Illinois College for a GRAC contest Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
