Panthers lose LIC tilt to Olney, 50-37

Sports Editor

Getting one of their injured players back gave Oblong High School's boys' basketball team a boost at the beginning Friday night, but it did not last the whole game.

The Panthers started strong with leading scorer Anthony Johnson back in the line-up, but could not maintain an early lead on the road, resulting in a 50-37 at Olney in Little Illini Conference play.

Oblong opened the game on 7-2 run and turned it into a 15-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Olney countered by outscoring Oblong 13-8 in the second quarter to close the gap to 23-19 at halftime. Olney carried the momentum over into the third quarter, where they outscored Oblong 20-6 to take a 39-29 advantage into the fourth quarter. The Tigers then outscored Oblong 11-8 over the final eight minutes to pull away for the win.

Neither team shot the ball well, but Olney was able to hold an advantage at both the three-point and free throw lines, which enabled them to pick up the victory. Oblong made just 15-50 field goal attempts for the game (30 percent), including 15-42 from two-point range (36 percent) and 0-8 from three-point range. Meanwhile, Olney connected on 17-41 shots from the floor (41 percent), which included a 14-31 performance from inside the arc (45 percent) and 3-10 from long distance (30 percent). Olney also made 13-20 foul shots (65 percent), while Oblong was 7-9 from the charity stripe (78 percent).

Oblong managed to outrebound Olney 46-24, but the Panthers committed 23 turnovers, compared to just 10 for Olney.

Johnson led Oblong with 21 points, 17 rebounds, two assists and one steal, while Jared Mayhew posted six points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots. Collin Meese netted six points, seven rebounds and one assist and Chase Mendenhall added four points, two rebounds and one assist.

Tate Nohren led Olney with 28 points, nine rebounds and three steals, while Chance Madden totaled 13 points, one rebound, one assist and one blocked shot and Alec St. Pierre posted nine points, five rebounds, four steals and one assist.

Oblong also lost the junior varsity game, 49-32.

Michael Brown and Brody Allen led OHS with six points apiece, while Zander Laino and Keaton Neeley each tossed in five points. Kyler Fear and Gage Kidwell netted three each and Alec Jacobs and Chandler Manhart added two apiece.

Oblong (16-10, 4-5 LIC) will play host to Red Hill for another LIC contest Friday at 6:15 p.m.
