Another junior high basketball team has won a regional championship and earned themselves a state tournament berth in the process.
New Hebron Christian School's eighth grade basketball team won the Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association Region 16 Tournament Friday with a 53-42 win over West Salem in Allendale.
Chris Rivera led NHCS with 19 points, eight rebounds and five steals, while Joey Wright posted 15 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists. Hunter Goodwin totaled 11 points, 18 rebounds, three steals and one assist, Markis Renshaw netted six points and one rebound, Lukas Baird contributed two points, one rebound and one steal and Shaelyn Wilber and Annie Bellinger collected one rebound and one assist apiece.
With the win, New Hebron (15-7) advances to SIJHSAA Class S State Finals at Rend Lake College in Ina, where they will play the Region 2 winner in the first round of the 16-team tournament at 1:15 p.m Saturday.
