NMS 7th spikers win Newton tourney

One Crawford County junior high volleyball team continued its roll to start the season, while another came out on the short end in action over the weekend.

Nuttall Middle School's seventh grade volleyball team stayed unbeaten on the season with three more wins over the weekend, after beating Casey-Westfield Friday and taking both of their matches Saturday to win the Newton St. Thomas 7th Grade Tournament.

At Newton Saturday, Robinson opened play with a 25-17, 25-15 win over Albion.

Laini Wright led NMS (8-0) with 14 points, including four aces, nine digs and five assists, while Audrey Maxwell netted 10 points with three aces. Malia Gunn totaled five points with one ace, 10 kills and one dig, Katie Veenstra posted five points, four digs, one kill and one assist, Mallory Sutfin recorded five assists and one kill, Amy McGahey added three kills and two digs and Adriann Randolph had three digs and one kill.

In the championship match, Robinson edged Effingham St. Anthony, 26-24, 25-22.

Gunn led NMS with 11 points, including six aces, six kills, one assist and one dig, while Veenstra totaled seven points with one ace, three digs and one assist. Wright posted four points with two aces, two kills and one dig, Maxwell netted four points with two aces, Kyndal Jobe collected one point with one ace, Sutfin added four assists and one dig and Randolph had four digs.

Against Casey-Westfield Friday, Robinson won the seventh grade match, 27-25, 25-15, while losing the eighth grade match, 15-25, 23-25.

In the seventh grade match, Gunn led NMS with 14 points, including nine aces, three kills and two digs, while Veenstra posted four points with one ace, four digs and one kill. Jobe netted three points with two aces and one kill, Wright totaled three points with one ace, two digs, one kill and one assist, McGahey contributed three points, three digs and two kills, Maxwell scored three points, Sutfin registered one point with one ace and five assists, Tayler Wilson chipped in with one point, one ace and one assist, Randolph added five digs and one kill and KayLee Bailey had one kill.

In the eighth grade match, Kirbie Mendenhall led NMS (6-2) with four points, including one ace, four digs, three kills and two assists, while Alexis Sullivan posted three points with two aces, seven assists and two digs. Sydney Beard netted three points with one ace, four digs and three kills, Christina Patterson contributed three points, two assists and one dig, Mykala Wolf chipped in with three points, two kills and two digs, Kylie Wisdom added one point and one assist, Abby Chipman had five kills, Abby Siler had three digs, one kill and one assist and Amelia Vaughn had two digs.

Robinson will play at Mattoon Tuesday at 6 p.m.
