Maroons cruise past Edwards Co., 59-36
JOSH BROWN
Sports Editor

An imperfect game was still more than enough to keep Robinson High School's boys' basketball team perfect in Little Illini Conference play Tuesday.

Robinson had a bit of an off night shooting the ball and had no production from its bench, but the Maroons still did enough things right to cruise past visiting Edwards County for a 59-36 win in LIC play.

Despite shooting 43 percent from the field, the Maroons made almost twice as many field goals as Edwards County and were never threatened after jumping out to an 11-4 lead after the first quarter. Robinson outscored Edwards County 20-13 in the second quarter to take a 31-17 lead at halftime, then broke the game open in the third quarter by outscoring Edwards County 24-9 to extend their advantage to 55-26. Edwards County outscored RHS 10-4 in the fourth quarter to reach the final margin.

Robinson made just 26-61 field goal attempts in the game (43 percent), which included a 23-46 performance from two-point range (50 percent), but they were just 3-15 from three-point range (20 percent). Meanwhile, Edwards County connected on 14-32 shots from the floor (44 percent), including 10-21 from inside the arc (48 percent) and 4-11 from long distance (36 percent).

There were only 10 free throws attempted in the game, with each team hitting four. The Maroons were 4-6 at the charity stripe, while Edwards County made all four of their foul shots.

Robinson also outrebounded Edwards County 30-12, while forcing 21 turnovers, including 16 steals, which helped offset the 14 miscues the Maroons committed.

Aaron Siler led RHS with 16 points, five assists, three rebounds and two steals. The senior guard now has 1,479 career points, which moved him into fourth place on the all-time scoring list at RHS, passing Mark Gockenbach.

Derrick Nicholas posted 14 points, nine rebounds, four steals and one assist, Brayden Scott totaled 11 points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists, Cory Blount netted 10 points, four steals, one rebound and one assist and Michael Akande added eight points and three rebounds.

No player reached double figures for Edwards County, as Jonah Laws led the Lions with nine points, while Jake Toutloff, Mitch Lear and Logan Potter scored six points apiece.

Robinson also cruised to a 53-25 win in the junior varsity game.

Jason Richart led RHS with 13 points, two steals and one rebound, while Cole Chipman posted 12 points, three rebounds and one blocked shot. Parker Bopp totaled 10 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals, Wes Harrison netted eight points, three rebounds and two steals, Cody Blount contributed four points, two assists, one rebound and one steal, Connor Griffin added four points, three rebounds, three steals and one assist and Noah Tennison had two points, one rebound, one assist and one steal.

Robinson (17-2, 8-0 LIC) is the top-seed in the upcoming LIC Tournament and will play the winner of Friday's opening-round game between Hutsonville-Palestine and Lawrenceville in the quarterfinals at Casey Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
