Hutsonville-Palestine overwhelmed by Newton in LIC play, 64-38

Size, or the lack of it, does matter for Hutsonville-Palestine's boys' basketball team.

The undersized Tigers struggled to deal with the height and strength of host Newton Tuesday night, resulting in a 64-38 loss in Little Illini Conference play.

Hutsonville-Palestine's difficulty was not limited to one end of the floor, as they scored less 10 points in three of four quarters, while giving up at least 11 in all four periods in the lopsided loss.

The Tigers fell behind 23-8 after the first quarter and never recovered. Newton then outscored Hutsonville-Palestine 13-9 in the second quarter to take a 36-15 lead at halftime, before the Tigers put together their best offensive quarter with 15 points in the third. However, Newton netted 17 more points in the period to extend their advantage to 53-32, then outscored Hutsonville-Palestine 11-6 in the fourth quarter to finish off the rout.

No player reached double figures in the game, as Dylan Webster and Tyler Heflin shared scoring honors with nine points. Graham Alspach tossed in five points, Joe Eckert and Treyver Ferguson each scored four points, Matt Schmidlin added three and Landon Williams and Cole Wesner had two each.

Luke Stone led Newton with 22 points, while Dylan Davidson also reached double digits for the Eagles with 14 points.

Hutsonville-Palestine also dropped the junior varsity contest, 59-35.

Wesner and Ferguson led the Tigers with seven points apiece, while Dylan Mason scored six. Blake Newlin tossed in four points, Jacob Weaver netted three and Justin Lowrance, Trent Newlin, Johnny Sheil and Mikey Roberts each added two.

Hutsonville-Palestine (11-9, 3-5 LIC) will play Lawrenceville in the opening round of the LIC Tournament at Casey Friday at 4 p.m.
