Statesmen lose to Vincennes, 83-65

A slow start was too much to overcome for Lincoln Trail College's men's basketball team Wednesday.

The Statesmen never led and trailed by 17 at halftime en route to an 83-65 loss to undefeated and No. 4-ranked Vincennes University.

After digging themselves a 36-19 hole by halftime, Lincoln Trail played with Vincennes in the second half, but did not gain any ground. The Statesmen were still outscored 47-46 in the second half en route to their second straight loss and just their second loss at home in seven games this season.

Vincennes found the surroundings of the LTC gym to their liking, as they made 50 percent of their field goal attempts (28-56), including 25-45 from two-point range (56 percent) and 3-11 from three-point range (27 percent). On the other hand, Lincoln Trail struggled to find the range on their home court, connecting on just 19-51 shots from the floor (37 percent), which included a 14-35 performance from inside the arc (40 percent) and a 5-16 effort from long distance (31 percent). The Statesmen made 22-32 free throws in the game (69 percent), while Vincennes was 24-50 at the charity stripe (48 percent). Lincoln Trail was also outrebounded 46-33 and turned the ball over 17 times, while Vincennes had 14 turnovers.

Jake Newton led Lincoln Trail with 20 points, eight rebounds and one assist, while Dennis Hightower posted 18 points, four assists and one rebound. Caleb Begle netted eight points, two rebounds and one steal, Joe Byrd recorded seven points and one rebound, Nick Painter contributed six points, nine rebounds and two assists, Jesse Tesmer collected two points, four rebounds and one steal, John Bootz added two points, one rebound and one assist and Adam Hendrix had two points and one rebound.

Darius Carter led Vincennes with 27 points, while Monte Burney was also in double figures for the Trailblazers with 19 points.

Lincoln Trail (7-6) will play host to Shawnee Community College Saturday at 7:30 p.m. At halftime of the men's game Saturday, the Oblong High School football team will be recognized for making the playoffs for the first time in school history.
