Lady Statesmen play better in 65-51 loss to Vincennes University
Sports Editor

Their best effort of the season to this date still was not quite enough to put Lincoln Trail College's women's basketball team in the win column.

The Lady Statesmen stayed right with visiting Vincennes (Ind.) University throughout most of Wednesday's contest, but still came out on the short end of a 65-51 decision.

It was the closest loss of the season for Lincoln Trail, who has lost 11 straight to start the season.

Lincoln Trail was right in the ball game at halftime, trailing just 28-24, but the Lady Statesmen were then outscored 37-27 in the second half to send them to another defeat.

The Lady Statesmen made just 14 field goals in the game, while Vincennes clicked for 27 baskets, but LTC was able to stay in the game at the free throw line. The Lady Statesmen connected on 18-22 foul shots (82 percent), while Vincennes was just 6-10 at the charity stripe (60 percent).

Lara Benningfield led LTC with 20 points, including a 12-12 effort at the free throw line, while Andrea Rivera tossed in 12 points. Gabrielle Duncan also reached double figures for the Lady Statesmen with 11 points, including three three-pointers, Erica Phifer netted seven points and Kelsie Coleman scored one.

Shelby Parmer led Vincennes with 21 points, while Zhanna Chukhrii dropped in 20.
