County bragging rights were again on the line Monday night in Palestine and that is where they stayed.

Palestine-Hutsonville's girls' basketball team defeated rival Oblong for the second time this season, the latest coming in the form of a 65-49 victory in Little Illini Conference play at Palestine.

Unlike the first meeting at the Crawford County Shrine Game in December, the Lady Pioneers were in control for most of the night Monday and gradually pulled away for the win.

The Lady Panthers actually held a 15-14 edge after one quarter, but Palestine-Hutsonville outscored Oblong 18-8 in the second quarter for a 32-23 halftime lead. Palestine-Hutsonville outscored Oblong 13-10 in the third quarter to extend their advantage to 45-33, then won the fourth quarter 20-16 to seal the win.

In what was a very physical contest, a total of 55 fouls were called, resulting in 80 free throws shot between the two teams.

As a result, the biggest advantage for Palestine-Hutsonville came at the free throw line, where they attempted almost as many free throws as they scored points. However, the margin could have been much worse. The Lady Pioneers connected on 33-59 free throw attempts (56 percent), while Oblong was 16-31 at the charity stripe (52 percent).

Neither team shot the ball particularly well from the field, as Palestine-Hutsonville made 16-46 shots from the floor (35 percent), while Oblong made 16-50 field goal attempts (32 percent).

Nicole Kiger paced Palestine-Hutsonville with 21 points, including a 15-22 effort from the free throw line, along with five steals, three rebounds and three assists, while Calee Fulling totaled 20 points, 13 rebounds, one steal, one assist and one blocked shot. Leslie Churchwell posted nine points, six rebounds, two steals, two assists and one blocked shot, Emily Nehls contributed eight points, eight rebounds, six steals and two assists, Kiley Rariden netted five points, seven rebounds and one steal and Taci Newlin added two points and two rebounds.

Oblong was led by Emily Lockhart with 21 points and five rebounds, while Kelsie Harper posted 11 points and one steal. Kailyn Pinkston netted six points, three rebounds and one assist, Cara Mayhew contributed five points, three rebounds and two steals, Kira Meese collected three points, four rebounds and two steals, Taylor Smith added two points and one steal and Ryann Chiddix had one point and three rebounds.

In the junior varsity game, Oblong picked up a 33-14 victory.

Pinkston and Smith led OHS with eight points apiece, while Lockhart tossed in six. Michaela Manhart netted four points, Trish Gregory scored three and Meese and Cheyenne Wells each added two.

Katherine Knoblett and Carol Carnahan led Palestine-Hutsonville with four points apiece, Becky Mendenhall scored three, Rariden added two and McKenna Elder had one.
