Statesmen lose at Lake Land, 76-61

Momentum could not be carried over into the new year for Lincoln Trail College's men's basketball team.

The Statesmen saw their three-game winning streak snapped after dropping a 76-61 decision at Lake Land College in Great Rivers Athletic Conference play to start the 2013 portion of their schedule.

Lincoln Trail stayed close for a while, but they could not climb out of an 11-point halftime deficit on the way to their third straight loss in conference play. The Statesmen trailed by two when a 10-0 Lake Land run put the Lakers on top 33-21 with 2:12 left in the first half. Lincoln Trail would close the gap to 38-30, but a three-pointer by Lake Land's Devin Carter at the buzzer made the score 41-30 at halftime.

The Statesmen continued to hang around, but could never get over the hump, as they were outscored 35-31 in the second half. Lincoln Trail was down by nine, 68-59, with just over five minutes to play, but they would not get any closer.

Turnovers were a factor for the Statesmen, as they committed 24 miscues, while Lake Land had only 11 turnovers. Lincoln Trail was also outscored at the free throw line, as they made 12-16 foul shots (75 percent), while Lake Land was 19-27 at the charity stripe (70 percent).

Caleb Begle led LTC with 15 points, while Dennis Hightower was also in double figures with 10 points. Jake Newton and Lawrence Smith tossed in eight points apiece, Ron Dietz netted six, Nick Painter and Adam Hendrix each scored four and Austin Callahan and Jesse Tesmer added three each.

Three players reached double digits for Lake Land, led by Harold McBride with 17 points. Carter tossed in 16 for the Lakers and Jason Henry added 14.
