RHS wrestlers go 2-2 at Robinson Duals

Sports Editor

It was an up and down day for Robinson High School's wrestling team Saturday, as they celebrated Senior Night by splitting four matches at the annual Robinson Duals Saturday.

The Maroons scored wins against Cumberland and Lawrenceville, while losing to Jasper, Ind. and St. Joseph-Ogden.

"The team did well," RHS head coach Levi Damron said. "We have improved. Jasper brought their varsity and they were by far the best team we have seen and will see this year. The other three teams were pretty equal, unfortunately, we came up just a little short against St. Joe."

Leading the way individually for RHS were Nic Iovanac and Tanner Keeler, who each went 4-0 with four pins at 195 and 220, respectively. Payton Stifle also had a good day at 120, going 3-1 with two pins and one forfeit, while five Maroons went 2-2 on the day. Kyle Langley (106) and Alec Keeler (126) each had two pinfall victories, while Andrew Gallagher (132), Nick Berty (170) and Geoffrey Harrison (285) picked up a pin and a decision apiece.

Also for RHS, Curtis Herrington went 1-3 with a pin at 152 and Aaron Rankin was 1-3 with a pin at 182, while Sam Cunningham (138), Sam Frerichs-Richard (145) and Dylan Dart (160) ended the day without wins.

Robinson started the day against Jasper and was only able to get three wins, as Gallagher, Iovanac and Tanner Keeler each won their matches by pinfall.

In their win over Cumberland, Robinson won eight of 13 contested matches on their way to a 39-23 victory.

Langley, Stifle, Herrington, Iovanac and Tanner Keeler each won by pinfall, while Gallagher, Berty and Harrison each picked up a win by decision.

Against Lawrenceville, the Maroons started down 12-0 after pinfall losses at 152 and 160, but Berty got RHS six points with a pinfall victory at 170. Rankin would lose by decision to Lawrenceville's Max Andersen, 5-1, but Iovanac and Keeler would pick up pins at 195 and 220 to give Robinson an 18-15 lead. Harrison would drop a 2-1 decision to Lawrenceville's Brandon Vessels at 285, which tied the match at 18-18, but Langley scored a pin at 106 to put RHS on top for good. After a double forfeit at 113, Stifle and Alec Keeler each won by pin for a 36-18 RHS lead with three matches left. Gallagher would lose by decision to Lawrenceville's Zach Kocher at 132, but the Maroons still led by 15 with two matches to go. Lawrenceville would get pins at 138 and 145, but the Maroons held on for a 36-33 win.

In the final match of the day, Robinson jumped out to an early lead, but could not make it stand up.

The match started at 170, with Berty suffering a 9-1 loss to Austin Upton, but Rankin, Iovanac, Tanner Keeler and Harrison followed up with consecutive pinfall victories to put RHS in front, 24-4. Langley would lose by pin at 106, then the teams traded forfeit wins to make the score 30-16 in favor of RHS. Alec Keeler would follow with a win by pinfall for a 36-16 RHS lead, but St. Joseph-Ogden would win the next four matches by pin to take a 40-36 lead, then win the last match at 160 by major decision to clinch the match. St. Joseph-Ogden was deducted a team point for misconduct during the match, but they still picked up a 43-36 win.

In junior varsity action, Robinson competed in 17 matches and picked up six wins, including four by pinfall.

Tristen Murphy and Jacob Ludwig picked up two wins apiece to lead RHS. Ludwig won both of his matches at 195, with one coming via pinfall and the other by decision, while Murphy went 2-1 at 170 with wins by pinfall and by decision. Landon Johnson also picked up a pinfall victory at 195, as did Zach Liddle at 285.
