Statesmen beat Danville Area, 80-63

Home has been very hospitable to Lincoln Trail College's men's basketball team so far this season.

The Statesmen picked up another win at home Saturday following a 10-day layoff, as they shook off a slow start by nearly doubling the output of visiting Danville Area College in the second half on their way to an 80-63 victory.

The win was the third in a row for the Statesmen and their fifth in six home contests this season.

Lincoln Trail struggled in the opening half and trailed by three, 34-31, at halftime. However, the Statesmen woke up in a big way after halftime, as they outscored Danville Area 49-29 over the final 20 minutes to run away with the 17-point win.

The difference in the game was inside the arc and at the free throw line for the Statesmen. Each team made four three-pointers, while Lincoln Trail made 25 two-point field goals and Danville Area made 20. Also, the Statesmen made 18-25 free throw attempts (72 percent), while Danville Area made 11-18 foul shots (61 percent).

Leading the way for LTC was Dennis Hightower with 28 points, 24 of which came in the second half, as he nearly outscored the entire Danville Area team by himself at halftime. In addition to eight two-pointers, Hightower also made three three-pointers - all in the second half - and was 3-4 from three free throw line.

Jesse Tesmer was also in double figures for LTC with 16 points, including 10 in the second half, as was Caleb Begle with 10 points. Nick Painter tossed in eight points, Lawrence Smith, Darryl Walker, Ron Dietz and Jake Newton scored four points apiece and Jacob Duncan added two.

Mike Ryce led three players in double figures for DACC with 16 points, while Ronnie White added 11 and Derek Shouse had 10.

Lincoln Trail ended the 2012 portion of their schedule with a 7-4 record. The Statesmen will next play at Lake Land College for a Great Rivers Athletic Conference contest Jan. 7 at 7:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Lady Statesmen finished the 2012 portion of their schedule winless after a 72-44 loss to Danville Area Saturday. No other information was available by press time.

Lincoln Trail (0-9) will return to action Jan. 7 at Lake Land College at 5:30 p.m.
