Lady Pioneers fall to Casey-Westfield

Another fourth-quarter meltdown sent Palestine-Hutsonville's girls' basketball team to yet another disappointing loss Thursday.

The Lady Pioneers coughed up a late lead Tuesday in a non-conference loss at Dugger, Ind., then did the same thing Thursday night, losing a nine-point lead after three quarters in a 50-44 loss to visiting Casey-Westfield in Little Illini Conference play.

The loss was the third straight for the Lady Pioneers this week and puts them the furthest below the .500 mark they have been all season.

Palestine-Hutsonville started the game well, building a 9-4 lead after the first quarter, then they outscored Casey-Westfield 16-12 in the second quarter to extend their advantage to 25-16 at halftime. Each team scored 12 points in the third quarter to make the score 37-28 in favor of the Lady Pioneers, but Casey-Westfield outscored Palestine-Hutsonville 22-7 over the final eight minutes to pull out the come-from-behind win.

Despite holding an advantage in free throws and three-pointers, the Lady Pioneers struggled shooting overall.

Palestine-Hutsonville made just 13-48 field goal attempts (27 percent), which included a 9-43 effort from two-point range (21 percent) and a 4-5 performance from three-point range. Meanwhile, Casey-Westfield made twice as many two-point shots as the Lady Pioneers, connecting on 18-45 from inside the arc (40 percent), while also going 2-2 from long distance (100 percent). The Lady Pioneers also made 14-19 foul shots (74 percent), while Casey-Westfield was just 8-14 at the free throw line (57 percent), but it was not enough for them to pick up the victory.

Calee Fulling topped Palestine-Hutsonville with 20 points, 15 rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot, while Leslie Churchwell posted 14 points, including four three-pointers, along with six rebounds and three steals. Emily Nehls netted six points, seven rebounds and two steals, Nicole Kiger contributed two points, four steals, two rebounds and one assist, Katie Williams added one point, five rebounds and one assist and Kiley Rariden had one point, two rebounds, one steal and one assist.

Jetta Green paced Casey-Westfield with 17 points, three rebounds and three steals, while Kayleigh Decker posted 14 points, five rebounds and five steals and Connor Cutright netted 11 points.

Palestine-Hutsonville also lost the junior varsity game, 40-24. The Lady Pioneers trailed by seven, 31-24, at halftime, but then were blanked 9-0 in the second half.

McKenna Elder led Palestine-Hutsonville with 10 points and three rebounds, while Siera Roach posted six points and nine rebounds. Rariden totaled five points, six rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot, Taci Newlin collected two points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals and Carol Carnahan added one point, three rebounds and two steals.
