Maroons pound Cumberland, 74-24
By JOSH BROWN
Sports Editor

Tuesday's performance by Robinson High School's boys' basketball team was a dominating one. Friday's was even more so.

The Maroons controlled Friday night's Little Illini Conference game at Cumberland from start to finish, on their way to an easy, 74-24 victory to stay unbeaten on the season.

For the second straight game, Robinson's defense limited its opponent to single digits in the first half, putting the game out of reach early.

Robinson was never threatened after opening a 22-3 lead after the first quarter. The Maroons then outscored the outmanned Pirates 23-6 in the second quarter for a commanding 45-9 advantage at halftime. Robinson continued the onslaught in the third quarter, outscoring Cumberland 20-6 for a 65-15 bulge, then each team scored nine points in the fourth quarter to reach the final margin.

The Maroons shot the ball well once again, especially from three-point range. They connected on 29-62 field goal attempts overall (47 percent), including 20-45 from two-point range (44 percent) and 9-17 from long distance (53 percent). Meanwhile, Cumberland made just 9-38 shots from the floor (24 percent), which included a 7-30 effort from inside the arc (23 percent) and a 2-8 performance from beyond the three-point line (25 percent). Robinson also went 7-11 at the free throw line (64 percent), while Cumberland made just 4-8 foul shots (50 percent).

Robinson dominated in every aspect of the game, including a 39-19 rebounding advantage. The Maroons also forced Cumberland into committing 23 turnovers, while making just 10 miscues themselves. Robinson also handed out 17 assists on their 29 made field goals.

Four players reached double figures to lead a balanced RHS attack, led by Cory Blount's 20 points. The senior guard made 6-7 attempts from three-point range, while also recording five steals, three assists and two rebounds. Aaron Siler posted 17 points, four assists, three rebounds and one steal, Michael Akande netted 12 points and three rebounds, Derrick Nicholas collected 11 points, 11 rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots, Cole Chipman chipped in with four points, three rebounds and two steals, Austin Weck registered four points, two assists, one rebound, one steal and one blocked shot, Brayden Scott totaled three points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and two steals, Jason Richart added two points, one rebound and one steal and Connor Griffin had one point and one steal.

Nine players found the scoring column for Cumberland, but none of them scored more than five points. Sam Bauguss led the Pirates with five points and two rebounds, while Tyler Phillips netted four points and three rebounds and Monte Wolke had four points and one rebound.

Robinson also rolled to a 52-22 win in the junior varsity game to stay perfect on the season.

Richart and Parker Bopp shared scoring honors for RHS with 11 points apiece, while Wes Harrison was also in double figures with 10 points. Chipman netted eight, Noah Tennison tossed in four, Cody Blount scored three, Landen Hoagland and Brody Scott each added two points and Wes Wright had one.

Robinson (7-0, 3-0 LIC) will play host to Lawrenceville for a LIC contest Friday at 6:15 p.m. The Maroons will also play host to Teutopolis Saturday at 6:15 p.m.
