Panthers crush Edwards Co., 86-51
Sports Editor

A huge second half provided more than enough cushion for Oblong High School's boys' basketball team to pick up their third straight win and second in league play Tuesday.

The Panthers turned a 10-point halftime advantage into a rout in the second half, as they ran away from visiting Edwards County, 86-51, in Little Illini Conference play.

Early on, the Panthers struggled to get separation from Edwards County, leading by just one, 18-17, after the first quarter. Oblong would outscore the Lions 19-10 in the second quarter to take a 37-27 lead at halftime, then exploded for 29 points in the third quarter - while Edwards County managed just 10 - to extend their advantage to 66-37 heading into the final period. The Panthers outscored Edwards County 20-14 in the final eight minutes to finish off the rout.

"We started off a little slow and were maybe a little tight with it being our first home game," OHS head coach Brent Harper said. "Our defense wasn't real good in the first quarter, but we picked it up after that. When we play defense like we should, we are going to cause teams a lot of problems."

Anthony Johnson paced the Panthers, leading the way with 37 points, including 21 in the first half. He also posted six rebounds, three steals, three assists and one blocked shot. Collin Meese posted 16 points, five steals and one blocked shot, Kurt Knollenberg netted 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal, Gerald Richardson registered 10 points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal, Jared Mayhew chipped in with five points and one blocked shot, Chase Mendenhall netted two points, three rebounds and one steal, Michael Brown added two points and two assists, Tyler Woods had two points and one rebound and Keaton Neeley tossed in two points.

"We shot the ball pretty well tonight," Harper said. "Anthony had a real good game, except at the free throw line, which is unusual for him. Collin stepped up his scoring and got a lot of steals that led to layups, Kurt stepped up and scored a little bit more, Gerald had a solid game and Chase was solid defensively."

Jonah Laws led Edwards County with 19 points, while Kevin Schuh was also in double figures with 10 points.

Oblong also won the junior varsity game, 50-38.

Alec Jacobs led OHS with 10 points, while Brown and Woods tossed in eight points apiece. Mayhew netted seven points, Brody Allen and Kyler Fear each scored six points, Zander Laino added three and Gage Kidwell had two.

Oblong (6-2, 2-0 LIC) will play Hutsonville-Palestine at Lincoln Trail College for the annual Shrine Game Friday at 7:45 p.m.
