Lincoln Trail men's basketball team splits pair of road games recently

Following a successful homestand that saw them climb back over the .500 mark, Lincoln Trail College's men's basketball team took to the road recently and came back with mixed results.

The Statesmen split two road games in recent days, falling in Great Rivers Athletic Conference play at Rend Lake College Saturday, before rebounding with a win at Kennedy-King College in Chicago Monday.

On Saturday, the Statesmen stayed close for a half with Rend Lake, but could not keep pace in the second half, resulting in a 95-74 loss.

Lincoln Trail was down just six, 40-34, at halftime, but Rend Lake outscored the Statesmen 55-40 in the second half to pull away for the win.

Of the 15 players who saw action for the Statesmen in the game, 10 of them found the scoring column. However, only two reached double figures.

Nick Painter led LTC with 19 points, 14 of which came in the first half, while Caleb Begle netted 15 for the Statesmen. John Bootz tossed in eight points, Jesse Tesmer scored seven, Dennis Hightower and Darryl Walker added six points apiece, Jake Newton chipped in with four and Jordan Houser, Jacob Weaver and Ron Dietz each had three.

Noel Allen led four players in double figures for Rend Lake with 23 points, while Bronson Verhines poured in 20. Cortez Macklin netted 17 and Dawson Verhines had 13 for the Warriors.

Monday's game was a lot lower-scoring, which seemed to play into LTC's favor. The Statesmen built a 28-23 halftime lead despite shooting 36 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, largely because Kennedy-King made just 27 percent of their field goal attempts in the first half.

The Statesmen were then able to outscore Kennedy-King 35-26 in the second half to pull away for the 63-49 victory.

Newton topped LTC with 13 points, two rebounds and two assists, while Painter totaled 10 points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists. Dennis Hightower posted nine points, five steals, three rebounds and one assist, Begle netted nine points and three rebounds, Tesmer collected seven points, five blocked shots and four rebounds, Bootz chipped in with six points, two steals and one rebound, Adam Hendrix added four points and one rebound, Jacob Duncan recorded three points and one rebound and Dietz had two points, four rebounds and one assist.

Devonn Gavin led Kennedy-King with 20 points, five assists, two steals, one rebound and one blocked shot, while Corday Sims totaled 12 points, seven rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot and Leavon Head added 11 points and five rebounds.
