Lady Maroons beat Cumberland for 1st win
Sports Editor

The third time was the charm for Robinson High School's girls' basketball team.

After two losses to start the season where they scored a total of 46 points, the Lady Maroons nearly eclipsed that total Monday night, which led to a win over visiting Cumberland, 43-31, in Little Illini Conference play.

Robinson got off to a little better start Monday, but still found themselves behind at the end of the first quarter, 10-9. However, the Lady Maroons picked things up in the second quarter, outscoring Cumberland 13-2 to take a 22-12 lead at halftime. Robinson then outscored Cumberland 14-6 in the third quarter to extend their advantage to 36-18, before Cumberland outscored RHS 13-7 in the fourth quarter to reach the final margin.

"We played great defense in the second and third quarters and created lots of turnovers," RHS head coach Dave Holubek said.

Ashlyn Sullivan paced RHS with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Kylee Hannahs posted 12 points and three rebounds. Emily Calip netted eight points and two rebounds, Mickey Shook contributed six points and six rebounds, Brittany Quick added two points and four rebounds and Kyndal Mendenhall scored two points before leaving in the first quarter with an ankle injury.

"Ashlyn was hard to stop inside," Holubek said. "She and Brittany were our anchors in the paint. Hannahs and Calip had lots of steals and Shook was all over the floor after loose balls."

Micah Seibert led Cumberland with 15 points, while Kamisha Holsapple was also in double figures with 14.

Robinson also won the junior varsity game, 32-23.

The Lady Maroons held a 7-2 lead after one quarter and extended their lead to 17-10 at halftime. Robinson then outscored Cumberland 7-4 in the third quarter for a 24-14 advantage, before Cumberland won the fourth quarter, 9-8, to reach the final margin.

Tessa Laino topped RHS with 10 points and two rebounds, while Maralee Birkofer posted eight points and six rebounds. Calip tossed in seven points, Alisha Lewis netted two points and three rebounds, Kelsie Thompson scored two points and Lisa Lackey had one point.

Robinson (1-2, 1-2 LIC) will play at Palestine-Hutsonville for a Little Illini Conference contest Thursday at 6:15 p.m.
