Lady Panthers lose to Olney, 64-30
By JOSH BROWN

A step up in competition has not been very kind to Oblong High School's girls' basketball team.

After beating Little Illini Conference newcomer Robinson in their league opener, the Lady Panthers have faced fellow newcomers Newton and Olney and came out on the wrong end of lopsided scores.

On Monday, Oblong dug themselves a big hole and could not climb out of it in a 64-30 loss to visiting Olney.

The Lady Panthers fell behind 25-8 after the first quarter, then failed to score in the second and faced a 38-8 deficit at halftime. Olney extended their lead to 50-17 after three quarters, then outscored Oblong 14-13 in the fourth quarter to reach the final margin.

Poor shooting once again plagued the Lady Panthers, as they made just 13-36 field goal attempts (36 percent), which included an 11-24 performance from two-point range (46 percent) and a 2-12 effort from three-point range (17 percent). The Lady Panthers were also just 2-5 at the free throw line (40 percent).

Emily Lockhart paced OHS with 17 points, 11 rebounds, two blocked shots and one steal, while Kelsie Harper posted seven points, three rebounds and three assists. Cara Mayhew netted three points and two rebounds, Cheyenne Wells added two points and one rebound and Kira Meese had one point, two rebounds and one steal.

Marley Milled led Olney with 21 points, eight steals, two rebounds and one assist, while Kelsey Shipman posted 13 points, four assists, three rebounds and one steal.

Oblong also lost the junior varsity game, 62-14. The Lady Panthers trailed 15-4 after one quarter and 26-11 at halftime, then were outscored 14-0 in the third quarter and 22-3 in the fourth quarter.

Michiala Turner led OHS with eight points, two rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot, Taylor Smith posted four points, two rebounds and two assists and Meese netted two points, three rebounds and two assists.

Oblong (3-3, 1-2 LIC) will play at Casey-Westfield for a Little Illini Conference contest Thursday at 6:15 p.m., then the Lady Panthers will play Palestine-Hutsonville in the annual Shrine Game at Lincoln Trail College Friday at 6:15 p.m.
