Winning championships is the goal for Robinson High School's wrestling team this season.
The Maroons delivered on an individual level Saturday, but came up just short at the team level.
Robinson won four individual titles on their way to a second-place finish in the 12-team Lawrence County Tournament at Lawrenceville.
The Maroons claimed titles at 113, 195, 220 and 285 pounds on their way to a total of 148.5 points, which placed them behind only champion Marion, who piled up 174 points.
"We had a good day," RHS head coach Levi Damron said. "Four champions is the most I've ever had. Marion is a big 2A school, so we beat all the teams in 1A."
Rounding out the field were Mt. Carmel (130.5), West Frankfort (128), Lawrenceville (123.5), Harrisburg (110), Olney (96.5), Fairfield (93.5), Carmi (83), Carterville (42), Anna-Jonesboro (27) and Effingham St. Anthony (11).
The Maroons managed their runner-up finish despite not having wrestlers in two weight classes and not scoring points in three others.
Leading the way for RHS was Payton Stifle, who pinned all three of his opponents on the way to winning the championship at 113. Stifle scored a pinfall victory over Fairfield's Dakota Boatner in 2:26 in his opening match, then took down Marion's Michael James in 28 seconds and pinned Olney's Colton Carmody in the title bout in 2:52.
The other three champions for the Maroons all won two matches by pinfall before winning by decision in their championship matches.
At 195, Nic Iovanac pinned Fairfield's Andrew Garrison in 1:23 and Carterville's Braydon Walker in 47 seconds, then scored an 11-0 win over Mt. Carmel's Cody Wall in the title match.
At 220, Aaron Rankin won by pinfall over Harrisburg's Tyler Owens in 3:27 and Marion's Tyrone Maples in 1:18, then edged Mt. Carmel's Andrew Wise, 6-4, in the championship bout.
At 285, Tanner Keeler earned pins over Anna-Jonesboro's Chris Edwards in 2:31 and Lawrenceville's Trevor Richards in 4:14, then downed Marion's Preston Lunon, 6-3, in the title bout.
Also, Robinson had two third-place and two fourth-place finishes.
Alec Keeler dropped his opening match at 126 to Mt. Carmel's Logan Johnson, 9-7, but rebounded to pin Marion's Michael McGee in 4:48 and Carmi's Devon Sisco in 3:21, before avenging his loss to Johnson with a win over him in the third-place match, 7-6.
At 132, Andrew Gallagher won by technical fall, 16-0, over Carmi's Christian Purcell in his first match, then lost by technical fall, 16-1, to Marion's Luke Abbott in his next match. Gallagher then came back to pin Fairfield's Dalton Smothers in 4:33 and beat Lawrenceville's Zach Kocher, 14-10, in the third-place match.
Nick Berty pinned Marion's Royce Harris in his first match at 182, then lost to Lawrenceville's Max Andersen, 6-2. In his next match, Berty pinned Fairfield's Anthony Thomas in 1:17, but lost a rematch with Harris in the third-place match by pinfall in 5:32.
Meanwhile, Kyle Langley also finished fourth at 106, even though he lost both of his matches.
Dylan Dart had a solid day at 160, finishing with a 3-2 record, but he did not place.
Nathan Worstell, Phil Salesman and Tristen Murphy also competed for RHS, but went winless on the day.
While he was pleased with his team's effort, Damron believes better things are yet to come.
"I think this team is only going to get better," Damron said.
Robinson will participate in the Petersburg PORTA Tournament Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
