Hutsonville-Palestine rallies past Martinsville for 72-57 win Tuesday

Balanced scoring enabled Hutsonville-Palestine's boys' basketball team to pick up another win Tuesday, as the Tigers rallied past host Martinsville for a 72-57 win in non-conference play.

It was the second win for the Tigers over the Bluestreaks in less than a week, as Hutsonville-Palestine also won their meeting with the Bluestreaks at the Cumberland Thanksgiving Tournament Friday.

As was their first meeting, the game was close pretty much throughout.

Martinsville jumped out to a 7-4 lead after one quarter and went up 10-4 early in the second quarter, but Hutsonville-Palestine - on the strength of five three-pointers - outscored Martinsville 19-13 to take a 23-20 lead at halftime. Martinsville would answer in the third quarter by outscoring Hutsonville-Palestine 22-16, including a 12-0 run at one point, that gave the Bluestreaks a 42-39 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Hutsonville-Palestine countered with a 16-0 run of their own that started late in the third quarter, giving the Tigers a 53-42 advantage with five minutes left in the game. Martinsville would finally stop the run to get within nine points, but they would not get any closer the rest of the way.

For the second straight game, five players reached double figures for Hutsonville-Palestine and they nearly had six. Leading the way was Graham Alspach with 16 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists, while Landon Williams posted 14 points, three steals and two rebounds. Dylan Webster totaled 12 points, eight rebounds, four steals and two assists, Cole Wesner netted 11 points, six rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot, Matt Schmidlin collected 10 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and one steal and Tyler Heflin added nine points, three steals and one blocked shot.

Martinsville was led by Zach Mulkins with 31 points, while Chris Lee was also in double figures with 11 points.

There was no junior varsity game, as Martinsville does not have enough players to field a team.

Hutsonville-Palestine (4-2) will play host to Marshall to open up Little Illini Conference play Friday at 6:15 p.m.
