A new era of Robinson High School girls' basketball got off to a rough start Monday.

The Lady Maroons opened their season with a Little Illini Conference match-up against county foe Oblong and was handed a 36-22 loss.

Ultimately, a slow start doomed the Lady Maroons, although they did make a comeback in the second half before faltering late.

"We had some first-game jitters and I didn't think everybody was on the same page," RHS head coach Dave Holubek said. "But, the mistakes we made fit the experience of our players."

Meanwhile, Oblong didn't exactly light the world on fire, but the Lady Panthers played well enough to win their third game of the season and start the conference portion of their schedule on a positive note.

"We are happy with the win," OHS head coach Tim Johnson said. "This was a good LIC win and it gives us a two-game winning streak. Those things are big for us."

Both teams struggled at the outset, but the Lady Panthers still managed to score seven points in the first three minutes of play to take a 7-0 lead they would never relinquish.

Robinson, meanwhile, committed four turnovers and four fouls going 0-2 from the floor in the first four minutes of play. The Lady Maroons would finally get on the board thanks to a free throw by Ashlyn Sullivan with 2:39 remaining to make the score 7-1, but Oblong would hold a 10-1 advantage after the first period.

The Lady Maroons would miss all eight shots and turn the ball over six times in the first quarter and would miss their first 11 shots from the field overall until Emily Calip's driving layup made the score 12-3 with 5:42 left before halftime.

After a free throw by Oblong's Kailyn Pinkston pushed the lead back to 10, Calip scored six straight points for RHS on a free throw, three-pointer and a steal and layup to pull the Lady Maroons to within 13-9 with 3:46 to play.

However, Oblong countered with six quick points on three-pointers from Taylor Harris and Pinkston to get the lead back to 10 and the Lady Panthers held a 19-11 advantage at halftime.

In the third quarter, Robinson put the clamps down on defense, as they held Oblong scoreless in the period, but they could only manage four points themselves.

Still, the Lady Maroons trailed by just four, 19-15, after three quarters and a three-pointer by Kyndal Mendenhall to start the fourth quarter trimmed Oblong's lead to 19-18.

Oblong would have an answer, as a three-pointer by Kelsie Harper at the 7:05 mark ignited a 13-0 run by the Lady Panthers that put the game out of reach. Kira Meese would score six straight points for OHS, then Emily Lockhart added a layup and Pinkston sank two free throws to make the score 32-18 with 2:43 remaining.

Robinson would get to within 11 points in the final minutes, but Oblong made enough free throws down the stretch to thwart any chance of a comeback.

"We kind of laid an egg in the third quarter, but we had a strong fourth quarter and made free throws down the stretch," Johnson said. "We can't have a bad quarter like that. We have to stay consistent, because that is going to hurt us eventually."

"I said at the beginning of the year we are going to have a never-give-up attitude and the girls battled to the end," Holubek said. "It was a physical game and our girls didn't back down. We had a lot of shots rim out and we missed a lot of free throws. If a few of those baskets fall here and there, we are in the game."

Neither team shot the ball well from anywhere on the floor, as Oblong made just 11-33 field goal attempts (33 percent), which included an 8-20 performance from two-point range (40 percent) and a 3-13 effort from three-point range (23 percent). Meanwhile, Robinson connected on 6-36 shots from the floor (17 percent), including 4-28 from inside the arc (14 percent) and 2-8 from long distance (25 percent). The Lady Panthers also made 11-19 free throws (58 percent), while Robinson made just 8-21 foul shots (38 percent).

No player reached double figures for the game, as Oblong was led by Pinkston with nine points, three rebounds and one assist. Meese netted nine points and three rebounds, Lockhart posted six points, three rebounds and one steal, Harper totaled five points, two rebounds, one steal and one assist, Harris contributed four points, three rebounds, three assists and one steal and Ryann Chiddix collected three points, 14 rebounds, four blocked shots and one assist.

"Pinkston really kept us in the game offensively," Johnson said. "We have to have that from her when the other girls aren't scoring."

Calip topped RHS with eight points, four rebounds, two steals and one assist off the bench, while Sullivan posted six points and nine rebounds. Mendenhall recorded five points, five rebounds, five steals and one assist and Kylee Hannahs added three points, four rebounds and four steals.

"The girls gave an outstanding effort," Holubek said. "I was really pleased with our bench play. But, hat's off to Oblong. They came in and out-executed us."

Oblong also scored a 52-18 win in the junior varsity game.

The Lady Panthers jumped out to a 10-2 lead after one quarter and held a 28-14 advantage at halftime, before outscoring RHS 24-4 in the second half to pull away for the win.

Meese led OHS with 15 points, while Taylor Smith was also in double figures with 13. Michiala Turner chipped in with eight points, Cheyenne Wells scored six, Michaela Manhart and Trish Gregory netted four points apiece and Bailey Johnson added two.

Calip led RHS with five points, while Emily Paddock and Maralee Birkofer tossed in four points apiece. Kelsie Thompson and Lisa Lackey each netted two points and Tessa Laino had one.

Oblong (3-1, 1-0 LIC) will play host to Newton Thursday at 6:15 p.m.; Robinson (0-1, 0-1 LIC) will play at Olney Thursday at 6:15 p.m.
