Panthers suffer 62-49 loss to Newton
By JOSH BROWN
Sports Editor

A night after getting a strong contribution from their supporting cast in a season-opening win, Oblong High School's boys' basketball team lacked the support it needed to pick up their second straight victory.

The Panthers struggled in several aspects, which added up to a 62-49 loss to Newton at the Cumberland Thanksgiving Tournament Tuesday.

Oblong stayed close early, as they trailed by just three, 17-14 after one quarter, then the Panthers outscored Newton 14-11 in the second quarter to even the score at 28-28 at halftime. Newton gained control in the third quarter, outscoring Oblong 22-13 to take a 50-41 lead, then outscored OHS 12-8 in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Anthony Johnson topped Oblong with 24 points, but no other player reached double figures. Jared Mayhew was next with eight points off the bench, Chase Mendenhall tossed in seven points, Kurt Knollenberg scored six and Collin Meese added four.

Corey Davidson led three players in double figures for Newton with 18 points, while Luke Stone and Elijah Knepper scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.

In the other pool play game Tuesday, Hume Shiloh defeated Chrisman, 43-32.

Oblong (1-1) will play Hume Shiloh at 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Cumberland Boys Thanksgiving Tournament. The Panthers will also play a crossover game Friday against a team from the other pool at a time to be determined.
