Statesmen split their first two games

There was both good and bad to start the season for Lincoln Trail College's men's basketball team.

The Statesmen started with the good, rallying late for a 74-72 victory at Parkland College in their season opener Thursday, but then followed up with the bad in a 70-58 loss at Illinois Central College Saturday.

In their season opener Thursday, Lincoln Trail staged a comeback in the final two minutes to edge Parkland.

The Statesmen held a 34-30 lead at halftime, but Parkland opened the second half on a 15-6 run to build a 45-40 lead with 13 minutes to play. Lincoln Trail battled back to tie the game at 56-56 and eventually grabbed a 60-59 lead, only to see Parkland respond with a 12-4 run to take a 71-64 lead with two and a half minutes remaining.

However, the Statesmen would close the game on a 10-1 run to pull out the win. Daryll Walker started the run with a basket at the 2:08 mark, then Nick Painter followed with a hoop after a Parkland turnover to close the gap to 71-68. Following another Parkland turnover, Caleb Begle drained a three-pointer at the 1:09 mark to tie the game, and he was fouled on the shot. Begle would sink the free throw to put Lincoln Trail in front, 72-71, but Parkland's Cedric Smith would be fouled on a rebound attempt with 31.7 seconds left. He made one of two free throws to tie the game, then Lincoln Trail turned the ball over with 14.1 seconds left.

Just when it looked like Parkland would get the last shot, Walker stole an errant Parkland pass and drove the length of the floor for a layup with 2.2 seconds left for what turned out to be the winning basket. Parkland called time-out at half-court with 1.3 seconds left, but the ensuing inbounds pass was knocked away and time expired, giving the Statesmen the win.

Dennis Hightower led LTC with 18 points, seven rebounds, two steals, one assist and one blocked shot, while Walker posted 16 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Jesse Tesmer was also in double figures with 11 points, along with nine rebounds and one blocked shot, Begle netted six points and two rebounds, Hutsonville's Austin Callahan chipped in with five points and one rebound, Adam Hendrix collected four points, four rebounds and one steal, Nick Painter contributed four points and one rebound, Jordan Houser added three points, two steals and one assist, Jake Newton had three points and one assist, Ronnie Dietz totaled two points, four rebounds and two assists and Lawrence Smith tossed in two points.

Mark Gilchrese led four players in double figures for Parkland with 16 points, while Shane Seniour and Cedric Smith scored 12 apiece. Dominique Walls added 11 points and Paris High School graduate Dalten Temples scored nine.

On Saturday, Lincoln Trail struggled on the offensive end, scoring just 25 first-half points on their way to a 33-25 deficit at halftime. The Statesmen scored 33 in the second half, but Illinois Central scored 37 to pull away for the win.

Hightower again topped the Statesmen offense, as he was the lone player in double figures with 16 points. Callahan, Walker, Smith and John Bootz scored six points apiece for LTC, Newton netted five, Dietz and Tesmer each tossed in four, Painter added three and Houser had two.

Anthony Swanigan, Jr., led Illinois Central with 11 points, while Tyler Lundeen and Anthony McGill were also in double figures with 10 points apiece.
