Robinson golfers finish 9th at Sectional
Sports Editor

After three straight years of having at least one state qualifier, Robinson High School's team has been shut out of the state finals for the second year in a row.

Robinson struggled at Monday's IHSA Class 1A Sectional in Carterville and finished ninth among 12 teams in the field.

The Maroons also narrowly missed out on having an individual qualify for the state meet, as junior Alex Brown lost in a four-player playoff for the final qualifying spot.

"We didn't play well overall as a team," RHS head coach Terry Roche said.

Robinson finished with a team score of 351, well off the pace of champion Effingham St. Anthony, who carded a 309 at Crab Orchard Golf Course.

Nashville finished second with a 323 and Alton Marquette was third at 329 to grab the other qualifying slots, while Hamilton County was next with a 331, followed by Carmi (336), Carlyle (339), Carterville (341) and Johnston City (345). Rounding out the field were Vandalia (381), Trico (389) and Marissa (399).

Brown topped RHS with a 12-over-par 82 on the par-70 course and just missed out on reaching the state meet. Brown was in a playoff with three other golfers, but he missed his birdie putt on the extra hole. Carmi's Neal Northcott made his birdie putt to win the playoff and clinch the final advancing spot.

Tom Goodman was next for RHS with an 85, while Tyler Wright and Tristen Murphy also scored for the Maroons with rounds of 90 and 94, respectively. James Gibson came in with a 99 and Zach Beard shot a 122, but those scores were not added to the team total.

Effingham St. Anthony's Joe Powell was the individual champion with an even-par round of 70.

Other individual qualifiers for the state meet included Johnston City's Derek Smith (73), Hamilton County's Marc Cox (74) and Landon Vaughn (76), Carterville's Jacob Eklund (74), Fairfield's Blake Davis (75), Vandalia's Blake Swofford (79), Austin Groce of Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran (79), Carlyle's Josh Palsenberger (81) and Waterloo Gibault's Sam Range (81).

"We had a pretty good year finishing second in conference and third at the regional, but fell short of expectations," Roche said. "But, we have a good nucleus coming back next year."
