Lady Maroons 5th in LIC tennis tourney
| Robinson High School's girls' tennis team managed to pick up just two wins out of the nine matches they played on their way to a fifth-place finish at the Little Illini Conference Tennis Tournament at Washington Park in Robinson Saturday.|
The Lady Maroons earned one win in singles and another in doubles, which earned them 8.5 points in the five-team tournament. Olney rolled to the championship with 28 points, while Flora was second with 22. Casey-Westfield finished third with 15.5 and Newton was fourth with 10.
"It was a tough day for us as a team," RHS head coach John Ireland said. "We did not win some close matches and our tournament outcome reflects that. The ability to close out matches seemed to be the difference today."
In singles, after receiving a first-round bye, Bethany Avery lost to Flora's Isaura Carro in the quarterfinals in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6, but rebounded to defeat Casey-Westfield's Leslie Gladu, 6-1, 6-3, in the consolation bracket. That advanced Avery to the consolation title match against Casey-Westfield's Caitlyn Cox, but the match was not contested and the two split the team points.
Also in singles, Robinson's Shania Kirkwood lost her opening-round match to Flora's Macy Warren, 4-6, 5-7, then fell to Gladu of Casey-Westfield in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 7-10.
"Bethany played some very good competition," Ireland said. "Her first match was a tough one to lose, but she did bounce back to progress to the finals of the back draw. Shania played two very tough matches and fell short on both."
In doubles, Robinson's duo of Brittney Fuller and Taylor Grove opened with a three-set win over Newton's Michaela Green and Sarah Stewart, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, but then lost their next two matches to Olney's Kelsey Shipman and Alex Kauble, 0-6, 1-6 and to Casey-Westfield's Audrey Scott and Dakotah Parker, 3-6, 2-6.
Meanwhile, the RHS team of Sierra Henry and Carolina Escobedo lost to Olney's Rachel Shan and Sadie Gassmann, 2-6, 0-6 and to Casey-Westfield's Ashley Hollensbe and Darbie Thompson in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 4-10.
"Brittney and Taylor had a repeat close three-set match against Newton from earlier in the week," Ireland said. "After losing to Olney's No. 1 seeds, their back draw match put them against Casey's No. 1 doubles team. They had some good match play with them, but were not able to win the match. Carolina and Sierra lost their first match against a tough Olney team, then were not able to pull out a victory against Casey in a very close contest."
Olney's Jaclyn Shan won the singles tournament with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Newton's Rebecca Mier-y-Leon in the finals, while Olney's doubles team of Shipman and Kauble won the doubles tournament with a 7-6(13-11), 6-2 win over Flora's Jessica Gaither and Katy Glassford in the title match.
"The tournament was full of some great competition," Ireland said. "Olney and Flora were dominant all day with three finalists out of four brackets. We have made great strides as a team over the year, but with today's competition it was not enough. Olney and Flora have deep-rooted junior tennis programs and it showed today. We will continue our efforts at that level also."
