Salon helping out women's shelter with fashion show
A local salon is once again putting its talents towards supporting an area women's shelter with the avant garde runway makeup and hair show UNboxed.

This is the third UNboxed, runway style hair and makeup design show Alluring Salon and owner Chasity Bogard, Hutsonville, have put on for SWAN (Stopping Women Abuse Now) center in Olney.

PHS offering dual credit business classes
Change often brings opportunity, and for Palestine High School students a new business teachers offers multiple classes and dual credit opportunities.

Dr. Jeff Walker has taught in Korea, Jakar, Wisconsin, Minnesota and now Palestine. He has bachelors and masters degrees in business education, and a doctorate in education specialist. He has taught and been an administrator in the Minnesota-Wisconsin area for several years before getting caught up in budget cuts.

Hospital board unsure about proposal to station Carle ambulance here
A neighboring county's hospital would like to base one of its ambulances at Crawford Memorial Hospital.

But while CMH board members want to do all they can to make sure patients are able to get the services they need, they are hesitant to do anything that might harm the local ambulance service.

Local residents have less than a month to prepare their shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.

Robinson will be among 5,000 U.S. drop-off locations collecting shoebox gifts for children overseas during Operation Christmas Child's National Collection Week, Nov. 12-19.

Area community colleges' tax levies up because of projected higher EAV
Tax levies topped the agenda for the Illinois Eastern Community Colleges Board Tuesday.

The Board of Trustees, meeting at the IECC West Richland Center, Noble, certified the district's tentative levies for the fiscal year ending June 30.

Unit 2 to make case for local support at IASB convention
Robinson Unit 2 will show its support for increased local control of Illinois schools during the upcoming Illinois Association of School Boards convention.

"Local control is the key," board president Dennis Inboden said during a discussion Monday of resolutions the IASB will vote on during the annual event, Nov. 16-18 in Chicago.

Can you name one teacher or school staff member who had an impact on your life? That was a question Palestine Unit 3 Superintendent Chris Long asked the Palestine School Board and those in attendance at Monday night's meeting.

"Every student has had that one teacher or educator throughout their career that was a difference maker," Long said.

The board accepted the resignations of Sonya Williams as grade school aide and Brooke Bennett as high school cheer coach.

Hutsonville board approves assignments
The Hutsonville Unit 1 Board of Education Monday night approved several extracurricular assignments and approved the annual audit.

The board hired Jacki Tracy as fifth and sixth grade cheerleading coach, Mike Billingsly as junior high basketball coach, Shawna Heldebrandt as high school softball coach, and Laddie Storkman as full-time bus driver.

Computer virus affects county budget, payroll
Crawford County is recovering from a computer virus that knocked out a server affecting several offices last month.

During Thursday's Crawford County Board meeting, County Treasurer Twyla Bailey and Clerk Fayrene Wright spoke about some of the difficulties encountered because of the virus.º

Delinquent taxes in paper next week
Time is running out for Crawford County property owners who still haven't paid this year's taxes.

The annual delinquent tax list will be published in Thursday's Daily News. Those taxpayers who still owe and who don't want included in the list have until 4 p.m. Monday to get the money to the office of Crawford County Treasurer Twyla Bailey.

Robinson's finances are in good order, according to its latest audit.

The Robinson City Council was informed Tuesday that the city's annual audit was good. Aldermen also agreed to buy some new tools and equipment for the street department during their meeting.

A Robinson High School alumnus has returned to his hometown with a surprising - and artistic - donation for local schools.

Wynn Ritch, RHS Class of 1963, presented Robinson Unit 2 Superintendent Josh Quick, RHS principal Victoria McDonald and Lincoln Elementary School principal Kathy Bemont with three prints of classic Saturday Evening Post covers signed by legendary artist Norman Rockwell.

Oblong allows more vehicles, shuts down solicitors
The residents of Oblong can now ride their UTVs and side-by-side vehicles, and should no longer be bothered by unwanted door-to-door solicitors.

The Oblong Village Board approved changes to two ordinances during Wednesday night's meeting. The first change includes side-by-sides and UTV vehicles to the golf-cart neighborhood vehicle ordinance. If a vehicle meets the requirements and a fee is paid, a permit can be issued to drive the carts around town.

Mental-health agency shutting down in area
A mental-health service that has provided clinical services to area residents for decades is closing its doors.

Southeastern Illinois Counseling Centers Inc. is filing for bankruptcy under Chapter 7, according to Executive Director Glenn Jackson. The last day for client services was Wednesday and employees have started receiving termination notices.

19 parcels, 43 trailers in county tax sale
Local properties with overdue taxes dating back to 2014 are going on the auction block.

Crawford County has completed its tax deed proceedings on real estate properties that were delinquent for 2014 and mobile homes that were delinquent for 2015 and prior real estate taxes. The county is offering the parcels and mobile homes to the public.
