Five candidates running for three seats on Oblong Village Board
The Village of Oblong has five candidates running for three trustee seats.

Incumbents Jay Haines and Dave Hasty are running to retain their seats, while former mayor Keith Waldrop along with Carrie Sablone and Jennifer Coulter have also thrown their hats in the ring. Trustee Debi Wilson has chosen not to run for another term.

All three seats are four-year terms, and the top three vote-getters will be elected.

Strokes claim DJ 'Roger Dee's life
The voice that brought music, news, comfort and laughter to Crawford County for more than 50 years has gone silent.

"Roger Dee" Reynolds died at 9:28 a.m. EST Tuesday at Regional Hospital in Terre Haute.

Reynolds suffered a stroke Feb. 28. He had spent the day working at the radio station and had just arrived home. He suffered a second stroke March 12.

Five candidates on Hutsonville Unit 1 ballot
The Hutsonville Unit 1 Board of Education has five candidates running for four trustee seats this election. Two candidates are running to retain their seats, Matt Draper and Travis Matthews, while three others, Connor McCoy, Mark Angel and Tanner Strohm, look to fill the seats vacated by Sherman Newlin and Bill Wyman. who have chosen not to run in this election.

Unit 2 tightening security with 'visitor management'
It may take a few seconds longer to enter Robinson schools starting in the fall, but it will mean increased security for staff and students.

The Robinson Unit 2 school board Monday authorized Superintendent Josh Quick to pursue purchase of a visitor management system for the four schools as the first step toward improved safety and security.

Hutsonville looking at co-op options
Competitiveness could be the driving force behind future athletic cooperatives between schools.

During Monday night's Hutsonville Unit 1 Board of Education meeting Superintendent Julie Kraemer explained the reasoning for looking at basketball and other sport cooperatives between Hutsonville, Palestine and Oblong. Hutsonville currently coops sports with Palestine, and the two schools agreed to coop football with Oblong last season.

Unit 3 may expand H'ville co-op
Concerns about the small number of athletes for certain teams have the Palestine Unit 3 school board considering expanding their co-op with Hutsonville.

The board Monday night discussed a meeting recently where administrators and athletic directors of Palestine, Hutsonville, Oblong, Martinsville and another district to be revealed later met to discuss the future of the "new" Little Okaw Valley Conference.

Righter: No 'free ride' on SNAP benefits
Crawford County's state senator doesn't want a low-income food program detached from its work requirement.

Legislation seeking to make the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program work requirements voluntary was brought before members of the Senate Human Services Committee March 12.

State Sen. Dale Righter will be in Robinson to discuss current issues Thursday, March 28.

Righter will play host to a town hall event at the Robinson City Hall Community Center from 6 to 7 p.m.

Health department offering pneumonia vaccines, home colorectal screening kits
The Crawford County Health Department is offering pneumonia vaccinations and home colorectal cancer screening kits.

Special clinics are scheduled at the department for 8 to 11 a.m. Monday and March 25. No appointments are needed.

The pneumonia vaccine is recommended for individuals 65 and older who have not had a pneumonia shot within the last year. It is now recommended that two pneumonia doses be given one year apart. Most insurances are accepted.

Hutsonville looking at flood solutions
Hutsonville Village Board continues to look at ways to relieve flooding in several parts of the village.

During Tuesday night's meeting resident Stan Stevens came to the board to voice concerns about the increased flooding in the Hill Crest Street area on the north side of town. Stevens said the amount of flooding seems to get worse after every rain, and local residents would like the village or someone to see what can be done.

Danks retires after more than 28 years as police officer
The end of another era for a Robinson Police Department officer was approved at last night's Robinson City Council meeting.

Chief Chad Weaver announced that he had received a letter from Officer Bryan Danks announcing his intention to retire effective May 1.

"It has truly been an honor to serve the citizens of Robinson for over 28 years as a police officer," Danks said in his letter.

Robinson Chamber presents community awards
Two long-time members of the Robinson business community, a long-time employer and a group of young up-and-comers were honored during the annual Robinson Chamber of Commerce banquet Monday.

Nearly 140 guests were in attendance at the Robinson Community as individuals and businesses were recognized for their contributions to the community.

Oblong to now inspect older trailers brought in
There is no longer an age limit on manufactured homes in Oblong, but residents wanting to bring in older structures will have to get them inspected first.

The Oblong Village Board Wednesday passed an amendment updating the village's "mobile and modular home" ordinance.

It's time to "spring ahead" again.

Time change for Crawford and surrounding counties is Sunday.

Daylight Savings Time begins at 2 a.m. Sunday, so Crawford County residents should turn their clocks ahead one hour before going to bed Saturday - if they don't want to get up an hour late Sunday morning.

Free seminar series will focus on birth issues
Crawford County residents interested in learning more about birthing services need not call the midwife. Instead, she will be conducting a free public education series in Robinson this month.

Crawford County native Debra Lowrance is a certified nurse midwife, women's health nurse practitioner and a lactation consultant. She has worked in Decatur the past few years and is a professor at the University of Illinois.

Genealogists offer workshop on German heritage
While many have an intense interest in their German ancestry, deciphering another language can often be very difficult. To help with this dilemma the Wabash Valley Genealogy Society will be offering a presentation entitled "Researching Your German Ancestry: Some Helpful Hints." This program will be presented in the Vigo County Public Library lower level conference rooms Monday, March 11.
