Unit 2 investments starting to show good returns
Robinson Unit 2 school board members received good news about district investments just in time for them to take the next step on a new budget.

"We just ended the best year we've ever had on your behalf," Mike Vezetti of Vezetti Capital Management told the board Monday. "We actually earned you some real money this year."

Unit 4 OKs teachers, coaches, drivers and tentative budget
The Oblong Community District 4 Board of Education took care of some budget and personnel matters as the new school year gets underway around Crawford County.

The board tentatively approved a budget for the 2019-20 school year. The budget will now be available for public review at the district office until the budget hearing to be held Monday, Sept. 23, at 5:50 p.m.

H'ville board passes budget, makes personnel changes
With the start of the new school year the Hutsonville Board of Education got a look at the 2019-20 budget and finalized a number of personnel changes during Monday night's meeting.

Originally, Superintendent Julie Kraemer reported the FY2019-20 budget was expected to show a $132,366 deficit, but on further review by the board it may show a positive final balance, and still include the purchase of two buses and maybe even a van.

Unit 3 to start taking bids for new gym roof later this week
The Palestine Unit 3 board learned about special dates for the 2019-20 school year during their meeting Monday.

Grade school principal Jessica Sisil announced the opening for of bids for gymnasium roof, which will begin later this week.

"Roof bids will open on Aug. 22 at the central office for the room of the gym," Sisil said.

The district has shown interest in making repairs to the roof since last summer.

County helps recycling center with $8K for repair
Crawford County will contribute $8,000 to help pay for repairs to a truck used by the local recycling center.

The Crawford County Board Thursday voted to give Crawford County Solid Waste the money needed to pay the bill for the latest round of repairs for a 2011 Isuzu diesel box truck.

Council hears about plans for rec center here
A timeline has not been set, but the capital campaign to fund creation of a Crawford County recreation center has passed the halfway point.

Lincoln Trail College President Ryan Gower updated the Robinson City Council on the project Tuesday.

Hutsonville trash pickup earlier; drainage fix working
Residents in the Village of Hutsonville will have to start putting their trash out either Monday night or very early Tuesday morning for pickup.

It was reported at the Tuesday night village board meeting that Republic Services will now be picking up starting at around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Local EMS merging with Effingham-area service
Officials of two ambulance companies hope a merger between United Life Care and Lakeside EMS will build upon ULC's tradition of service in Crawford County.

It was announced last week that United was merging with Lakeside, a two-year-old service based in Effingham County. Andrew Hargrave, a co-owner in United since 2015, explained fellow co-owner Earl Deckard is preparing to retire. The merger means Lakeside owners Jarod Estes and Steven Gray will come in to help Hargraves manage the local service.

All counties in state part of ag disaster
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has declared an agriculture disaster in all 102 Illinois counties, citing historic flooding across the state.

Illinois saw one of the wettest springs in its history this year, resulting in delays in getting corn and soybean crops planted.

Crawford County has had almost 29.5 inches of rain since Jan. 1, with 6.45 falling in July alone. That was on top of the 4.63 inches reported in June.

Area standoff is ended without incident
A several-hour standoff with police in Marshall ended peacefully Wednesday.

Marshall Chief of Police, Chris Smithson, said officers were serving a warrant for the arrest of Charles Tyler Livvix, Marshall, due to a missed court date Wendesday, when Livvix shut himself inside a house on South 14th St.

Oblong board discusses potential grants, TIF district
The Village of Oblong continues to look at ways to improve the village, and how to pay for it.

During the Wednesday night village board meeting Mayor Teresa Fielder and trustees reported on, discussed and approved a number of items that could mean big things for the village. First up was report from Trustee Keith Waldrop on the status of two potential state grants.

Local schools are ahead of game on threat assessment
Schools around the country have been setting up teams to assess threats posed by students who display signs of violence like the former student who compiled a "hit list" years ago in high school and went on to kill nine people in a weekend shooting in Dayton, Ohio.

Locally, schools have been using threat assessment for some time.

A colorful life: The work of the 'Paint Lady' graces many local homes
For some having your job become your life it is a curse, but for others, like Betty Tuttle, it has been a blessing that will be hard to give up.

Finally, after more than 50 years in the paint business, Betty Tuttle, 80, "The Paint Lady," has decided to give up her job at Neihaus Home Center in Robinson.

"It will be very difficult to give up," Betty said. "I love my job. I love people. I will miss them all."

As summer begins to wind down, Crawford County will play host to two popular annual events this weekend.

Flat Rock Homecoming and the Oblong Tractor and Engine Show run Friday through Sunday, offering food, music, fun and the familiar putt-putt of vintage tractors.

State officals give new policies credit for jobs
Crawford County unemployment was down again in June.

According to the Illinois Department of Employment Security, 4 percent of the county's work force was unemployed and actively seeking new jobs during the month.

This was down from 5.3 percent in June 2018 and 4.1 percent in May.

School-supply giveaway in Oblong
A school supplies giveaway will be Saturday at First Christian Church of Oblong from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Family Life Center.

Each student must be accompanied by an adult and will receive an individualized backpack full of certain school supplies, while supplies last. A total of 100-120 backpacks will be available in the giveaway.

Suspects in custody after $26K heist
Hours of searching for a man wanted for robbing a Mt. Carmel Verizon Store along with three others came to an end about 8:10 Tuesday night.

The search for the suspect, identified as Latrell S. Coe, 18, Indianapolis, began after authorities stopped a vehicle sought in connection with an 11:30 a.m. armed robbery the store at Ninth and Cherry, Mt. Carmel.

4 hurt as car, EMS collide
Four people were sent to the hospital Tuesday after a collision between a car and an ambulance.

Crawford County Sheriff William Rutan said the United Life Care Ambulance was on an emergency transfer run from Crawford Memorial Hospital to Good Samaritan in Vincennes about 6:14 p.m.
