Big weekend: H'ville event, Leaverton lights
Coming up next: Santa Train, school concerts and more.
The holiday season gets in full swing in Palestine and Hutsonville this weekend.

Palestine Chamber of Commerce will light up Leaverton Park with the Lighting of the Lights Friday.

More than 40,000 Christmas lights will illuminate the park through New Year's. Activities begin at 5 p.m. with beans and cornbread, hot chocolate and cookies and performances by local choirs. Fireworks are at 6 p.m., followed by a visit from Santa.

The annual Christmas on the River in Hutsonville is 4:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Saturday.

Children's crafts, games and cookie decorating, along with a cookie walk in the community building is 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The Rudolph Express ride run from 4:45 to 6:45 p.m.

A soup supper in the fire house is 5 to 6:30 p.m. and the Joy of Jesus Sign Choir will perform in the Tree of Life Church from 6:15 to 6:45 p.m. A candy cane hunt is planned for the downtown ball diamond from 6:40 to 6:50 p.m.

The big village Christmas tree will be lit at 7 p.m. and Santa will arrive via fire truck at 7:05 p.m.

A total of 150 decorated Christmas trees will be on display in Hutsonville throughout the season.

Santa will be a busy ol' elf next weekend.

The Palestine chamber is also planning Cocoa and Cookies with Santa For 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7.

Then on Sunday, Dec. 8, the Indiana Rail Road Santa train will roll through Crawford County.

The train will stop on South Range in Oblong from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and on Lincoln Street in Palestine from 1:45 to 3:15 p.m.

School holiday concerts also start soon.

In Robinson, Washington Elementary School second-graders start things off with a concert at Highland Church of Christ Tuesday, Dec. 3.

The first grade Christmas program is Thursday, Dec. 5 at HCC and the kindergartners will perform at the church Tuesday, Dec. 10. All shows are 6 p.m.

Lincoln Elementary School will host its annual fifth grade band concert at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12.

Robinson High School's annual Fine Arts night is 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, and Nuttall Middle School's annual concert is 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17.

The Oblong High School band and choir concert is 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, at the high school.

The Oblong junior high concert is 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at Oblong Elementary School. Elementary concerts, featuring students in grades five and down, are 9 and 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, at OES.

The Hutsonville High School Christmas program is 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, while the elementary school concert is 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17.

Palestine High School will host a student art show at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18. It will be followed by the Palestine Unit 3 band concert at 6 p.m.

The Palestine Grade School Christmas program is 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19.
