The Palestine Unit 3 board learned about special dates for the 2019-20 school year during their meeting Monday.

Grade school principal Jessica Sisil announced the opening for of bids for gymnasium roof, which will begin later this week.

"Roof bids will open on Aug. 22 at the central office for the room of the gym," Sisil said.

Meanwhile high school principal Tangi Waldrop announced that the annual homecoming parade will take place Wednesday, Sept. 11.

The district's PTO organization will debut their new pro-dad's breakfast beginning Tuesday, Sept. 3. All men recognized as father figures are welcome to attend.

The high school's breakfast club will have their gatherings beginning at 7 a.m. every Wednesday after Labor Day at Palestine First Presbyterian Church.

Monday was also the first meeting for new superintendent Dr. Jo Campbell. Campbell was hired as superintendent following a special meeting on Aug. 6.

He received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree in 1970 and a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1972, both from Greenville College. Campbell also received a Master of Science Degree in 1992 and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Educational Administration in 2008, both from Southern Illinois University.

In addition, he holds a General Administrative Certification (1995) and a Superintendent Certification (1997) from SIU.

Campbell has worked in education at Woodlawn High School, CCSD 204 in Pinckneyville, Albers Elementary District 63, Pope County CUSD 1, La Harpe CSD 335 and Schuyler-Industry CUSD 5. He was named interim superintendent of Canton Union School District, in 2016.

Campbell announced during the meeting that the monthly school board meeting in September would be pushed back to Sept. 23 to accommodate the preliminary budget.
