Terry Bruce is retiring as chief executive officer of Illinois Eastern Community Colleges.
Bruce, who was first chosen as CEO in March 1996 and has led the four-college system since then. His retirement is effective June 30.
IECC, which includes Lincoln Trail College as well as Olney Central College, Frontier College in Fairfield,, Wabash Valley in Mt. Carmel, has had four leaders. James Spencer, Harry Smith, Ron Hutkin and Bruce.
Bruce's contract was recently extended to August 2021, but Bruce said, "It is time for me to make a change. I have been with the District for more than 23 years. My time here has been professionally and personally fulfilling.
"I am grateful to the board of trustees for having given me this opportunity," he added.
"Terry Bruce has been an outstanding leader for our college district," IECC Board Chairman Andrew Fischer said. "His legal expertise, his vast knowledge of this area and our community colleges, as well as his political background, will be missed."
Bruce was state senator from 1971 to 1985 and U.S. representative from 1985 to 1993.
Bruce also serves on the Illinois State Community College Board, where he is vice-chairman.
