A group of Robinson High School students will participate in a national engineering competition this summer, but they still could use additional funds to pay the way.
The Maroon TEAMS team placed fourth out of 40 teams in a state contest at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology March 6. This qualified the members to compete against more than 50 other teams at the national level in Atlanta June 22 to 25.
This is the first time an RHS team has achieved this honor.
"We're very excited about the opportunity," faculty sponsor David Forbes said, explaining TEAMS stands for Test of Engineering and Aptitude in Mathematics and Science.
The theme for the competition will be "Engineering a Greener World." Students will compete in creating a multimedia presentation, a design and building contest and a poster presentation. The goal is make existing infrastructure more ecologically friendly.
Team members are Alex Hermann, Lukas Baird, Abby Ferris, Kyndal Jobe, Audrey Maxwell, Ian Quick, Kyran Roe-Weaver and Cole Waggoner.
Forbes, in his second year as sponsor, said the school has partnered with Marathon Oil to help the students prepare for the contest. Also, various businesses in the community are assisting with financial sponsorships.
Most of the money to pay for the trip has been raised, but more is needed. To donate, contact the RHS office at 544-9510, or send it to the attention of "TEAMS Trip" at the school, 2000 N. Cross, Robinson.
