A Crawford County man was killed in a two-vehicle accident on U.S. Route 50 about a mile east of Lawrenceville early Thursday.
According to the Illinois State Police Department, Rodney S. Stephens, 38, West York, was killed in the 4:45 a.m. crash when the bronze 1999 Chevrolet pickup he was driving was struck by a green 1998 Jeep Wrangler driven by Alicia D. Stephens, 22, Bridgeport.
According to an accident report, Alicia Stephens was traveling west on U.S. 50 and crossed the center line, striking the vehicle being driven by Rodney Stephens - which was eastbound - head on.
While Rodney Stephens was dead at the scene, Alicia Stephens was transported to Lawrence County Memorial Hospital, then flown to St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville. Her condition is unknown.
Preliminary charges against Alicia Stephens include driving under the influence of drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia and having no vehicle insurance.
U.S. 50 was closed for about an hour because of the wreck, the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department reported. Once the road was reopened, traffic was limited to one lane while the state police reconstructed the accident.
The state police and Lawrence County Sheriff's Department are continuing to investigate the accident. The ISP says both drivers were wearing their seatbelts.
A death notice for Rodney Stephens appears on Page 2 of today's Daily News.
