Rural Flat Rock woman killed in head-on crash
The driver of a van was killed in a head-on crash about 4 p.m. Friday in northern Lawrence County.

Nancy Hunter, 57, rural Flat Rock, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Lawrence County Coroner Shannon Steffey.

A passenger in the 2007 Honda Odyssey van Hunter was driving - Ryan James Mendenhall, 4, Lawrenceville - and the driver of a 1993 GMC pickup involved in the crash - Richard Michael Churchwell, 63, Lawrenceville - were air-lifted to St. Mary's Hospital, Evansville, according to the Illinois State Police.

Their conditions were not available at press time.

The Lawrence County Sheriff's Department received a call from Crawford County dispatch at 4:08 p.m. Friday concerning a 911 call, reporting a motor vehicle crash in northern Lawrence County.

The state police reported the crash occurred on Lawrence County Road 1800E, a quarter mile north of County Road 1700N. Police say the accident occurred six-tenths of a mile east of Birds.

According to the accident report, Hunter was northbound on 1800E, while Churchwell was headed in the opposite direction. The Hunter vehicle traveled left of center and struck the Churchwell vehicle head on.

Neither Hunter nor Churchwell were wearing seat belts, police said. Mendenhall was properly restrained in a child safety seat.

According to Steffey, The Lawrence-Allison Fire Protection District, the sheriff's department and the Lawrence County Ambulance Service responded to the scene.

Steffey said an autopsy was pending for Hunter. Her death notice appears on Page 3 of today's Daily News.
