Bricker, Olympian sister tell story to Katie Couric
A former Oblong resident will make an appearance on national television next week.

Jennifer Bricker, 25, will appear on Tuesday's episode of Katie with her sister, Olympic gymnast Dominique Moceanu. The episode, hosted by Katie Couric, focuses on life-altering "Family Secrets."

During a taped segment, Bricker, Moceanu and their younger sister, Christine, will discuss how they learned they were sisters.

Bricker, who was raised in Oblong by her adopted parents, Sharon and Gerald Bricker, idolized Moceanu while growing up. It was Sharon Bricker who eventually discovered that the two girls were biological sisters.

On Oct. 1, 1987, Romanian immigrants Dumitru and Camelia Moceanu were devoted to the promising gymnastics career of Dominique, who had turned six just the day before. When Bricker was born without legs, Dumitru decided the family couldn't afford the medical expenses and immediately put the infant up for adoption.

Growing up with her adopted family in Oblong, not having legs wasn't treated as a disability. Jen was a natural athlete. She played softball and volleyball and competed in power tumbling.

She is now a professional dancer and acrobat who has performed in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and, most recently, Dubai.

Bricker contacted Moceanu in December 2007 and gave her the news. The gymnast revealed the relationship to the world in 2012.

Katie airs locally on ABC affiliate WAWV-TV, Terre Haute. Mediacom carries the station on channel 8.
