The Oblong Unit 4 Board of Education voted to push ahead with grant applications which will help the district provide needed services for its students.

The board approved making applications for Title I, Title II and pre-kindergarten grants. The grants will help the district continue to work to meet No Child Left Behind standards and provide services to its students who have special needs.

Also at Monday's meeting, the board approved amendments to the 2012-13 school calendar to reflect the snow days taken this winter. The last day students are in school is now May 24 and teacher's institute is May 28.

The board also approved the summer tutoring program for grades 1 through 8. The program will run from June 3 through June 27, Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon.

Before the meeting, Oblong High School Principal Fritz Wheeler recognized the members of the 2012 football team for their best team record since 1983-84 and the first playoff appearance for any Oblong High School football team.

Wheeler also recognized the 2012-13 basketball team for its back-to-back regional titles and head coach Brent Harper for being named by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association as Coach of the Year two years in a row.

Oblong Elementary School Principal Dave Parker also recognized students for their participation in the Character Counts Program for the months of February and March.

In personnel matters, the board accepted Brittney Murray's request for unpaid medical leave for the remainder of the 2012-13 school year and appointed Jane Attaway as the district's authorized agent for IMRF.

The Oblong Sports Boosters reported to the board they had contributed $13,552.41 to the district for athletic equipment, uniforms and T-shirts, which was almost double what they had budgeted. Next year the boosters have budgeted contributions of $30,027. Unit 4 Superintendent Jeff Patchett has credited the Oblong Sport Boosters several times in the past for keeping some programs running, as well as the Oblong Academic Foundation and the Oblong Band Boosters.

The board also approved summer camps:

• Oblong Elementary Cheer Camp for June 18-20.

• Volleyball Mini-Camp on May 4.

• Volleyball Team Camp in Springfield July 27-28.

The board also approved the eighth-grade class trip to Holiday World on May 15 and the junior-high Beta Club trip to Turkey Run State Park on May 24.
