The Spooktacular 5K race is returning to the Oblong Fall Follies.
The event to benefit the Oblong Children's Christian Home, co-sponsored by the children's home and Oblong Chamber of Commerce, will be Oct. 27.
The 5K will begin at 8 a.m. (rain or shine) in the village park and loop through town on the north side of Illinois Route 33. Athletes of all ages and abilities may participate.
Awards will be presented immediately after the event in these age categories: 20 and under, 21-30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-60, and 61 and over. In each age division, a male and female competitor will be honored.
Participants may also choose to walk the course.
Competitors may bring children in strollers. There is no time limit to complete the course.
"This fun run is one of our favorite fundraisers," said Amy Kemp, the home's director for promotions and partnership development. "There is just such a sense of community when folks show up in droves to walk and run the course in support of the Children's Home."
Online registration is underway at www.oblongchristianhome.org. The fee is $25 per participant, regardless of date of registration. Previously, costs have increased after a given date; but, to encourage as many people to participate as possible, fees will not change. Entry fees are non-refundable.
Each pre-registered participant is guaranteed a commemorative T-shirt and goodie bag. Additional shirts will be ordered for distribution on race day, but those registering after Oct. 10 cannot be assured of requested sizes.
All competitors are eligible for randomly drawn door prizes. Area businesses in Oblong, Newton and Robinson have contributed to underwriting the race.
