Proposed fuel tax would be serious mistake

What was he thinking?

Or was he thinking?

We can only hope that the tax proposed by Gov. Rod Blagojevich on fuel exported to other states dies a quick and obscure death. It’s not even in bill form yet, but it would be hard to imagine an Illinois legislator who would touch this idea with a 10-foot pole.

After all, Illinois is the fourth-largest oil refining state, and Robinson’s Marathon Ashland Petroleum facility is one of the biggest producers. Illinois refineries employ thousands of the state’s highest-paid manufacturing workers, pay millions in local property taxes and contribute in countless other ways to their communities.

It’s ironic that a governor who tied his own hands with his campaign pledge not to raise sales or income taxes would consider wreaking such economic havoc with a, uh, how do you say it....tax increase.

But it’s certainly part of a pattern. Rather than attacking the core problems of Illinois’ budget, the governor continually proposes gimmicks, shell games, creative accounting, “fund sweeps” and “stealth taxes” that result in, at best, temporary fixes and, at worst, only the illusion of a solution.

Make sure your employees in Springifeld know what you think about this proposal. Write or call the governor (207 Statehouse,

Springfield, IL 62706; (217) 782-6830) or your area legislators, who are already mobilizing to head off this nutty idea, if it gets to their desks.
