HHS students set example

For high-school students, copying someone else’s work is a big no-no. But other schools in Crawford County should be looking at — and copying — what Hutsonville High School economics students are doing.

As reported in Thursday’s Daily News, the students, with the help of some grant money, are working with local government and business leaders on the challenge of bringing affordable, quality housing to the village.

What can high-school kids do to solve an “adult” problem? Maybe more than we think. Often, getting a project over the “tipping point” between inaction and action takes only a little energy and imagination — qualities that the HHS students have already demonstrated.

Will there be setbacks and discouragements along the way? Almost certainly. That’s why it’s important that we do what we can to support the students’ efforts.

But maybe the best thing we can do to support their initiative is to emulate it — find ways to get kids elsewhere in Crawford County communities connected with challenges in their own communities.

Their work will instill pride, develop skills and, maybe, make some of them think about returning to their hometowns to make a difference as adults.
