CCDA is vital to all of us

The Oblong Village Board is to be commended for doing its part to support county-wide economic development.

In spite of concerns about the Crawford County Development Association’s recent leadership changes, the board voted to contribute more than $5,000 to support CCDA and its international marketing efforts.

The county-wide development group depends on contributions from government bodies throughout the county to keep its doors open, and Oblong’s vote of confidence is welcome during a time of transition for CCDA. Other government bodies should follow suit.

While the board’s show of support was impressive, questions like, “What have they done for Oblong (or Robinson, or Palestine, or Hutsonville) lately?” miss the point of what CCDA is all about.

In the competitive environment of economic development, the lesson was learned long ago that communities, even communities larger than those in Crawford County, cannot go it alone. The people who locate industries and make decisions about expansion don’t have time to mess with intramural squabbles between small towns over which one should be chosen for a project.

On the positive side, communities that band together in county-wide or region-wide efforts multiply their resources and strengths, finding that they have much more to offer as a group than any of them do individually.

Any community in Crawford County should support any economic-development effort anywhere in the county — and, really, any effort within commuting distance. Our county has benefited from workforces being created or expanded in surrounding counties and even across the state line. Those workers bring back salaries to spend where they live — which means another crucial aspect of economic development is making our communities the best places to live that we possibly can.

If you live in Oblong — or anywhere in Crawford County — why not take a minute to thank the village board for doing the right thing? Contact information can be found elsewhere on this page. And if you live in a community where the local government hasn’t made a decision yet on whether to continue its support of CCDA, let your aldermen or trustees know that their support of county-wide economic development is important to all of us.
