War creating a new 'Silent Majority'

Editor:

For a long time now, our leaders in the White House have linked patriotism with support of military operations in Iraq. The President believes that anyone with feelings of dissent for the war is automatically against the troops and therefore must also be against America. Remember the famous line Bush used a few years ago, "You're either with us, or against us."

It has now been four years since we went to war with Iraq. In that time, well over 3,000 brave men and women have died fighting for the "freedom" of the Iraqi people. You would think that after four years of fighting (longer than World War II) Iraq would have a stable government, and safe streets, where its citizens could bask in the glow of democracy. It isn't so!

Iraq is in the middle of chaos. Its streets are filled with more danger and evil than when Saddam Hussein was in power! It is true that this war has cost our nation too much. Each day we spend fighting this, we are dumping lives, tax dollars and American morale into a bottomless pit.

On May 24, President Bush held a televised news conference, in the middle of the day when most Americans could not watch it, in which he warned us that more blood will be spilled in Iraq this summer. Even worse, he also wavered on his "staying put" position by adding that America would simply leave Iraq if asked to by its government. What happened to the fight for freedom, or "stay the course"? More importantly, what does this say about the value of the cause over 3,000 men, women, husband, wives, sons and daughters died for?

So now these questions must be asked: "By supporting this war today, are you working against the troops? By giving your vote of confidence to this mess, do you approve of our worldwide reputation being shredded and dragged through the dirt? By blindly approving the hateful rhetoric of divisive politicians, are you allowing the downfall of the last, best hope on Earth?" It's something to think about.

On the bright side, however, public support for the war has dropped significantly. Now a large majority of Americans realize that to support the troops now, you must ask for their safe return home. As another wartime President, Richard Nixon, said during a different war, and in a different context, there is a "Silent Majority" of citizens across our nation with strong views, that are kept to themselves. But today's "Silent Majority" has lived through many wars, and know from what they've learned in life that peace is the only way to achieve freedom.

As we head into the next presidential election we will hopefully end our silence and deliver to the men and women fighting to take the helm from George Bush the same ultimatum the President put to us: "You're either with us or against us."
