We need to do more to stop animal abuse

Editor:

I recently read in the Daily News WeekEnder the heartbreaking story about the latest animal abuse case of the horses. This story was very disturbing, and I hope the owners feel the remorse for what they have done to these poor animals. Animals are just like our children, and we must protect them! Besides the new Illinois law on animal neglect, I think a person who is charged with this crime should have to register at the local humane shelter that they are an offender of animal cruelty and they should not be allowed to adopt any animals within 10 years. This should be the same as what a sexual offender does. (A sexual offender harms a child and an animal abuser abuses an animal.)

We should develop some sort of system to stop the cycle or at least slow it down. I think horses can be one of the most loving animals of all. It was terrible to think about how long those horses went without food! One other thing: I think our governor should establish some special funding for a much-needed program for our county and surrounding counties - an ACPA (animal control police agency). The Humane shelter has their hands tied when it comes to this sort of situation, and it's up to the local law enforcement to handle the situation. With animal cruelty on the rise, the law enforcement doesn't always have the time to catch these owners in the act all the time.

I encourage anyone who sees an animal with no shelter or with their ribs and bones sticking out to call the police. The animals can't speak for themselves!

My son walked out the door a little while back and saw a horse standing in our yard..(Flat Rock)..eating the bird bread I had put out for the birds...
We are not horse people and had no idea on how to hold this horse there..so it just started to walk to the back of the property and out into the fields...
I did call the police..
I had assumed..it had gotten loose..
I did not read the article you read...but, I cried and prayed for this horse for weeks..and still wonder, what happened to the poor thing...its ribs too..were sticking out. I agree with you there should be something like that done..when people get caught abusing and neglecting animals.
