11/10/2005 4:09:00 PM Wal-Mart opposition 'knee-jerk'
I fully understand the knee-jerk reaction to being adverse to a Super Wal-Mart locating in Crawford County.
I remember when we had the luxury of neighborhood groceries, local bakeries, meat markets, milk delivered to our homes, also ice deliveries. Let's face it, those were the good old days! Travel agencies were in vogue 25 years ago. TV repair shops thrived.
The majority of people voicing their dissension against a Super Wal-Mart do not hesitate to travel to Terre Haute or Vincennes once or twice a month to doshopping to save a little money on certain items. Then brag about their purchases when back in town.
Retailing practices have changed and our opinions of retail marketing must change or we will be living in the dark ages. 1 hate to see Mom & Pop businesses go by the wayside but this seems to be inevitable if we are to move on.
This "we don't want changes" attitude is the same type of reasoning why Crawford County has four local high schools instead of one consolidated county high school. But, that is another debatable subject.
