Constitution gives president 'latitude' to act

Editor:

I have often thought the framers of the Constitution were wise beyond their years.  It's almost as if they had knowledge of what the country would face in the future and wrote it to avoid the country's collapse.  Take for instance the recent killing of a terrorist Iranian general in Iraq who was responsible for the deaths of many Americans and people from all around the world.

The framers of the Constitution foresaw that Congress would be either slow to act or not capable of reaching a decision on issues which required immediate action for political reasons.  They gave the president the latitude to act quickly when the situation dictated as with the killing of the Iranian general.  If the president was required to get approval from Congress for every action requiring immediate action, not only would this terrorist still be alive, but we would probably have been invaded many years ago because Congress would not have been able to quickly agree on a course of action to defend us.

Imagine, if you will, having a rabid dog in your yard attacking people and animals and you have a policeman present to shoot the animal quickly.  Then imagine having to call the City Council to get authorization for that policeman to take action beforehand.  The council would have to meet, discuss the issue and vote to tell the policeman to shoot the dog.  That is assuming the council happened to like the home owner, the policeman, and had no animal rights advocates who want to stall the issue through debate.

I know there are those out there who think Congress should be consulted every time there is an issue of significance, but imagine them bringing their political beliefs into every decision as they do now.  The country would be overrun by enemies who know that there would be no resistance - only continual debate.  I really believe if Congress had to vote on where they would all would go for dinner before they could eat they would all starve to death.

I also know that there are those out there who hate this president so badly they are unable to see that this president, and any past or future presidents, must have the ability to act quickly to situations requiring immediate action.  If they don't we are in real trouble as a country.

I didn't pay a lot of attention in high school to how our country really works and why it was set up this way; but I have learned through the years a lot I didn't know.  I only wish that our kids today were required to learn how the country really works and why it was set up this way.  Sure would help before we gave them the right to vote without knowing what they were voting for.
