Congratulations on cemetery restoration

Editor:

Henry Mehler, a senior at Hutsonville High School, chose the Old Hutsonville Cemetery for his Boy Scout Eagle project. After Henry and his father restored the Capt. Markley monument earlier this year, Henry saw the need to improve the old cemetery, and chose it as his Eagle Scout project. Many stones had been knocked over, many were leaning, some needed to be repaired, and many needed to be cleaned.

Saturday, Oct. 14, was the first day of this two-day project. Henry recruited 24 persons, including seven Boy Scouts from Marshall Troop 276; 20 parents. including interested adults, the Hutsonville township road commissioner, Hutsonville township supervisor and board member, James Halstead Sr. Chapter NSDAR members; and Jim Niksch, member of Illinois Historical Preservation Agency, assisted with his first day's project.

Out of 262 gravestones located in the cemetery, 49 gravestones were reset, leveled, restored or cleaned on the first day of the project.

Lunch was served to all attending, compliments of Hutsonville Township, at the Baptist Church.

Hutsonville is certainly the winner and especially proud of this young rural West Union resident for taking on and completing this wonderful project. Henry is also a member of Ft. LaMotte Society, Children of the American Revolution.

Next time you are traveling north on North Pleasant Street in Hutsonville, please stop and look at what can be done when a member of our community goes to work on a worthwhile project.

Congratulations to Henry Mehler on his first successful day of Cemetery Restoration in the Old Cemetery in Hutsonvillie.

Scarlett Williamson, President, Hutsonville Historical Society
