George Whiston Jr.

George Norman Whiston Jr., 81, of Oblong, IL passed away on Monday March 16, 2020.

He was born in Effingham, IL on November 1, 1938, to George N. and Frances Helen (Sheets) Whiston Sr. On June 3, 1962, he married Mary Jo (Juell) Whiston who preceded him in death in 2007.

He served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1963 and the Army Reserves from 1963 to 1967. George was a lifelong resident of Oblong and was the third Generation of George Whiston Cable Tool Drilling and Oil Production.

He was a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Oblong, Oblong High School class of 1956 and Graduated from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in 1960. He was also a member of the Ste. Marie American Legion Post #932, where he served as Chaplin, the Oblong Antique Tractor and Engine Association, the Oblong American Legion Post #219 and a former member of the Robinson Moose Lodge #1364. He enjoyed antique cars, stationary gas engines and playing poker.

George is survived by a son and daughter-in-law Bryon and Connie Whiston, Robinson, IL; two daughters and sons-in-law Jeri and Larry Bolton, Salem, IL, and Jo Lynn and Terrence McCrossan, Alpharetta, GA.; six grandchildren, Jeron and Lauren Harris, Johnathon and Courtney Whiston, Jordon Harris and fiancé Chelsea Hoalt, Kaitlin Whiston, Branon McCrossan and Marin McCrossan; and four great-grandchildren, Lakelyn, Piper, Raelyn Juell and Blake. George is also survived by his fiancé Kathy Huddleston, Oblong, IL.

Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, infant son George Whiston III and Sister Sue Ellen Waldrop.

It was George's wish to be cremated with services to be held at a later date. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of a contribution to the Oblong Antique Tractor and Engine Association, Oblong Oil Field Museum or Oblong American Legion Post #219.
