Dead deer kills woman

A deer-related accident turned fatal in Clay County Tuesday.

According to Illinois State Police, a school bus driven by Lawrence C. Northrop, 72, Flora, was eastbound on U.S. Route 50 at 4:25 p.m. when a deer entered the roadway from the south. The bus, which had no passengers, struck the deer head on causing it to go airborne into the westbound lane of traffic.

A late-model Ford Focus, driven by Samuel L. Kerrick, 53, Salem, was westbound when it struck the airborne deer. The animal's body crashed through the windshield, injuring a passenger, Bridget D. Kerrick, 42, Salem.

The passenger was transported via ambulance to Clay County Hospital where she died. Samuel L. Kerrick suffered minor injuries.

The crash is still under investigation.
