Unit 1 board approves 2018-19 school calendar
Daily News

The Hutsonville Unit 1 board Tuesday night adopted the 2018-19 school calendar.

The school year will start August 15 and 16 with teacher's institutes and the first day for students will be Friday, Aug. 17. Christmas break will begin Dec. 21 with an early dismissal and students will return Tuesday, Jan. 8. A teacher's institute is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 7.

"If all emergency days are used, the final day of attendance would be May 24, 2019 and we will have a teacher's institute on May 28," Superintendent Julie Kraemer said. Kraemer also said the calendar is very similar to the last few years and coincides with most of the county schools.

Also during the meeting, the board was informed that the Palestine-Hutsonville Committee of Ten will have two town hall meetings next week. Hutsonville's will be at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 26 in the high school gym. Palestine will have its meeting the following night at the grade school. Kraemer encouraged the board to attend the meeting at Hutsonville, and communicate with district residents about any questions they would like answered at the meeting.

Once again the board was informed that the fiscal year 2019 budget will have a different look this year. During last month's meeting Kraemer said the state's new evidence-based budget formula. The new formula will break down the grant and GATA reports by high school vs grade school. Kraemer said she has attended two meetings so far regarding the financial part of it. So far administrators have learned how to deliver the budget and what's in it.

"So don't be surprised if next year's budget looks different than it has," Kraemer said.

High school principal Travis Titsworth told the board that the school is hosting a regional high-school boys' basketball tournament this week. Hutsonville defeated Martinsville Monday to advance to Friday's championship game. Basketball has garnered a lot of interest from kindergarten through fourth grade students. A total of 63 kids have joined the youth basketball program, with more than 30 additional students joining as cheerleaders, for a total of about 100. Titsworth said he was surprised by the interest and said he considered not going through with it, but the sudden interest has changed his mind.

The Crawford County Band Festival will be at the school at 7 p.m. March 1. Hutsonville band director Angela Compton has worked tirelessly on the event, which board president Tina Callaway and Titsworth acknowledged. The festival will feature high school and junior high students from Crawford County. High school students that qualify will receive credit from Lincoln Trail College.

Prom is scheduled for April 28 in the high school gym.

Grade school principal Guy Rumler reported that Mrs. Goodwine will be hosting a Caudill party this Friday. The fourth grade class has started their swimming unit this week, and finally, the annual 5th and 6th grade basketball tournament started tonight. Eighth graders and sophomores will attend career day at LTC on March 14.

The grade school will also be hosting an eighth-grade volleyball regional March 6,7 and 8.
