A relative newcomer to Robinson is also an author who has published several books on topics such as herbalogy and living off the grid.
Merlyn Seeley, who sometimes used the pen name Spiritwalker, recently published Preparing For The Collapse - Growing, Foraging & Making Natural Medicine.
"I specialize in off-grid living, homesteading, survival, prepping, herbal medicine and spiritual topics," Seeley said.
The book is the second in a series of books for surviving after an economic collapse.
Seeley explained the book tells how to grow and forage for herbs and other plants and how to produce natural medicines from them.
For example, a favorite of his is yarrow. "It's a very powerful medicine people have been using for thousands of years," he said. It's edible and it serves as an antibiotic. It is also anti-viral and anti-fungal.
Seeley began to "dabble" in herbal medicine and far eastern culture when he was 13. His interest has only increased as he grew older.
"I think it appeals to the natural part of humanity," he said.
Seeley moved to Robinson last June to help take care of his mother, Betty Seeley. Prior to that, he had been living off the grid himself.
"I left my off-grid Missouri Ozarks homestead after living 100 percent off the grid in a pallet cabin I built with just the help of my young daughter for over eight years," Seeley said.
During the growing season, they produced 98 percent of the food they ate. In the winter, they lived on food they had preserved and items acquired through trade with other homesteaders.
"We thrived, grew, foraged, raised and hunted all the food we consumed and more," he said.
Seeley was at the forefront of a move to an area of Missouri called the "Ozark Safe Zone" by people who chose to live off the grid. He found his advice in demand and started giving workshops on how to live off the land. People from as far away as England would attend. As demand continued, he turned to writing books about his various interests.
Seeley has been a freelance writer and herbalist for more than 30 years. He is also a Native American medicine man, which is why he uses the name Spiritwalker.
According to Cherokee tradition, a spiritwalker is one who can walk the line between the physical and spiritual worlds and use this ability for healing.
Seeley is descended from the Cherokee who once lived in the northeastern part of Georgia.
"Natural, holistic ways have a spiritual aspect," he said. "To me, it's all one category. It's all combined."
He has written almost 50 books available through Amazon.com and other online booksellers, both digitally and in paperback. Books can also be purchased directly from him. He can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org.
He has also penned articles for the Houston Herald, Yahoo! Inc., CBS News Local and Examiner.com as well as periodicals such as Backwoodsman, American Survival Guide Mag., Grit, The Green Gazette and Self Reliance Magazine.
Seeley is now working on the third book in the Preparing For The Collapse series and expect it to come out late this year or in early 2020.
